Whoopi Goldberg took a wave of backlash after she used her platform on ABC’s “The View” to claim that black Americans — even in the year 2025 — were no better off than Iranian citizens living under the brutal and oppressive Islamist government.
Goldberg and cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin squared off on the topic during Wednesday’s broadcast, when Griffin correctly pointed out the fact that an Iranian woman would likely be arrested — or worse — for stepping foot outside wearing even the relatively modest outfit she had on at the time. “I can’t have my hair showing, I can’t wear a skirt, I can’t have my arms out,” she said.
Goldberg apparently objected to the idea that Iranians were more oppressed than black Americans, and said, “Listen, here’s the thing — let’s not do the — let’s not do that, because if we start with that, we have been known in this country to tie gay folks to the car.”
“I’m sorry, but where the Iranian regime is today is nothing compared to the United States,” Griffin interjected, again correctly.
“They used to just keep hanging black people!” Goldberg exclaimed, and continued to press the point.
But much like their reaction when Goldberg claimed that the Holocaust was “not about race,” critics quickly made it clear that they were not buying her assertions.
Guy Benson drove the point home during an appearance on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom,” saying at first, “I call that show a daily national televised insane asylum for a reason.”

“It’s hard to overstate the moral idiocy of what we just heard there,” he said, marking Goldberg as the prime source of that. “Alyssa Farah is making the point correctly about how people are subjugated brutally by the Iranian regime and Whoopi’s like, ‘Oh, look at what we do here in the U.S. There are hate crimes here.'”
“Our government prosecutes hate crimes,” Benson added. “They don’t commit them as a matter of course. For her to say, ‘Oh, well, if you’re black in the United States in 2025, it’s basically the same as being a dissident or anyone in Iran, that is deeply, deeply ignorant.”
“Hi Whoopi Goldberg!” another posted. “You say your life is just a brutal as Iranian women. Meet Nika Shakarami. After the IRGC kiIIed Mahsa Amini, the 16-year-old burned her scarf in protest and vanished. The IRGC delivered her corpse to her parents — who only identified her by her birthmark.”

“Whoopie Goldberg believes black women in America are more oppressed than women living under the Islamic Regime… Whoopie can freely travel without the consent of a male relative, show her hair, sing, dance, and express her unfiltered s****y opinions on TV without being arrested… Meanwhile Iranian women are kidnapped, raped, and beaten for simply showing their hair… Whoopie is a ‘useful idiot,'” another added.

Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) weighed in as well, saying, “If America were anything like Iran as she suggests, Whoopi Goldberg would be punished for the way she bashes our country. But because she lives in America, she has the freedom to say idiotic things on TV everyday. That’s the beauty of our country.”
