A group of migrant truckers sued the California Department of Motor Vehicles earlier this week for canceling thousands of Commercial Driver’s Licenses.
California canceled nearly 20,000 Commercial Driver’s Licenses after facing pressure from the Trump administration over the issuance of such licenses to illegal immigrant truckers. The federal crackdown started after a string of fatal crashes involving illegal immigrant truckers.
The Department of Transportation has labeled California one of the worst offenders of states issuing commercial driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, threatening to withhold $160 million in federal funding if they refused to make a change. California gave 17,000 drivers a 60-day cancelation notice after the federal government determined that the licenses’ expiration dates exceeded the time the migrants have been permitted to be in the United States, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The lawsuit, which was brought about by the Asian Law Caucus, Sikh Coalition, and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, claims that California law requires the DMV to change the expiration dates on the licenses or to give applicants the opportunity to reapply for a corrected license when the errors occur, the outlet reported.
“The state of California must help these 20,000 drivers because, at the end of the day, the clerical errors threatening their livelihoods are of the CA-DMV’s own making. If the court does not issue a stay, we will see a devastating wave of unemployment that harms individual families, as well as the destabilization of supply chains on which we all rely,” Munmeeth Kaur, legal director of the Sikh Coalition, said in a statement.
“These drivers have spent years anchoring their lives to these careers, only to now face potential economic ruin through no fault of their own—they deserve better, and California must do better,” Kaur said.
“Our state has a clear moral obligation and legal duty to protect workers who have done everything right,” Katherine Zhao, senior staff attorney at Asian Law Caucus, said in a statement.

“Without an immediate court-ordered stay, many drivers will lose their jobs through no fault of their own. At a moment when families should be spending time with loved ones, these workers are instead confronting financial devastation and the loss of livelihoods they have spent years building. We are asking the court to compel California to protect workers,” Zhao said.

One of the illegal immigrants who was issued a California commercial driver’s license allegedly killed three people after making an illegal U-turn on a Florida turnpike in August.
Harjinder Singh, who hails from India, was seen in viral dash-cam footage looking unfazed by the crash.
Singh had failed his commercial driver’s license test 10 times in three months before he was given the license in Washington and later California, investigators said.
Singh also failed an English language proficiency test, “providing correct responses to just 2 of 12 verbal questions and only accurately identifying 1 of 4 highway traffic signs” after the fatal crash, according to the Department of Transportation.
