Miami Dolphins cornerback Byron Jones warned NFL players over the weekend against taking “pills” and “injections,” claiming that doing so caused him to experience injuries that have caused him to have serious pain and have left him impaired.

Jones made the remarks on Saturday when he highlighted an NFL tweet from 2015 that showcased his record setting jump at the NFL combine in 2015.

“Much has changed in 8 years. Today I can’t run or jump because of my injuries sustained playing this game,” Jones tweeted. “DO NOT take the pills they give you. DO NOT take the injections they give you. If you absolutely must, consult an outside doctor to learn the long-term implications.”

“It was an honor and privilege to play in the NFL but it came at a regrettable cost I did not foresee,” he continued. “In my opinion, no amount of professional success or financial gain is worth avoidable chronic pain and disabilities. Godspeed to the draft class of 2023.”

Jones was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft in 2015 by the Dallas Cowboys and eventually ended up in Miami, where in 2020 he signed a five-year, $82 million deal as one of the top cornerbacks in the game.

However, he experienced an injury to his ankle and Achilles tendon that took surgery to fix. He did not play last season.

Miami Herald reporter Barry Jackson downplayed rumors that the tweets meant that Jones was going to retire or that there was a lawsuit coming.

“In wake of today’s tweets… Byron Jones is not retiring and there’s no pending lawsuit, per source,” Jackson said. “With his 14.4 M salary non guaranteed, the general expectation is he will be cut by Dolphins with post June 1 designation. But nothing has been settled on that front.”
