Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy on Thursday dismissed mass illegal immigration as a “fake problem” and suggested Americans would be safer living in communities with high levels of immigration, despite his own history of living in communities with relatively low levels of immigration.
In an interview with The CT Mirror, Murphy dismissed the Trump administration’s framing of illegal immigration and downplayed the exact concerns that helped propel the president to a second term in the White House.
“The problem, according to the Trump administration, is a country that has been invaded, a country that is at risk physically because of the presence of people from other countries. That is a fake problem. That is not a real problem,” Murphy said.
The leftist Democrat then argued that communities with large immigrant populations are safer than those with more native-born Americans.
“Nobody likes to hear this, but immigrants, first-generation immigrants, and undocumented immigrants both commit crimes at rates lower than natural-born Americans, than people that are born here in this country,” he said. “So, if you want to live in a safe community, you are actually better off living in a community with people that just got to the United States of America.”
Murphy moved to Hartford in 2020 after facing criticism for going more than a year without owning a residence in Connecticut, according to The Hartford Courant.
Murphy and his wife, Cathy Holahan, purchased a 3,392-square-foot, three-bedroom home in Hartford after selling their previous home in predominantly white Cheshire, Connecticut, the outlet reported.
Hartford, a majority-minority city, is far more racially diverse than Cheshire, where about 80% of residents are white. During the period when Murphy did not own a home in Connecticut, the Democratic senator and his family reportedly split their time between Washington, D.C., and Murphy’s parents’ summer home in Old Lyme.
The historic coastal town in southeastern Connecticut is even less racially diverse, with white residents making up about 88% of the population.
The Daily Wire has extensively covered violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants and how mass migration—including legal immigration—has reshaped communities across America.
On Aug. 20, the first deportation flight to Haiti since the Trump administration terminated protections for Haitian illegal immigrants left with gang members, child sex predators, and other violent criminals, The Daily Wire reported.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that 162 illegal immigrants from Haiti were deported on the latest flight and shared the photos and rap sheets of 15 of the deportees. It came after the Supreme Court opened the door for President Donald Trump to end the longstanding Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for roughly 350,000 Haitians in June.
“On the latest deportation flight back to Haiti, we deported dangerous criminals including pedophiles, gang members, drug traffickers, and violent assailants,” Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement. “TPS was never designed to be permanent, yet previous administrations have used it as a de facto amnesty program for decades. Under the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump, we are putting America first again.”
