McConnell, Again, Says War In Ukraine Is ‘The Single Most Important Event Going On In The World Right Now.’ Americans Beg To Differ.

Polls indicate that the American public’s support for endless Ukrainian aid is waning and that the issue is not even in the top 10 of most pressing concerns, but that has not stopped Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) from attempting to convince the nation that the ongoing war there is the “single most important event going on in the world right now.”

The comment came as fentanyl continues to kill thousands of Americans each month, illegal aliens flood the border, inflation continues to hit families hard, and Ohio deals with the fallout from a train derailment in East Palestine. Nonetheless, he joined Fox News on Thursday afternoon to make the case for sending billions more to President Volodymyr Zelensky. News anchor Dana Perino asked him how Biden can convince the public to support his plan for the economy, but McConnell used it as an opportunity to make his own pitch.

“Well, I’m gonna try to help explain to the American people that defeating the Russians in Ukraine is the single most important event going on in the world right now,” McConnell responded. “It will save us an enormous amount of money down the road if the Ukrainians can succeed. They’re not asking us for any personnel, they’re asking us for financial help.”

The senior Bluegrass State senator praised Europe for their efforts, such as taking in millions of refugees, while arguing that the total cost is relatively small compared to America’s gross domestic product.

McConnell actually had some complaints about how Biden handled this situation. He thinks the White House hasn’t moved quickly enough nor sent enough money.

“There should be bipartisan support for this. My biggest criticism of the president is he seems not to have done enough soon enough,” he added.

The senator attempted to answer Perino’s question by ending his statement by arguing that the war is “important.” He didn’t provide any specific reasons why other than saying that it would be more expensive down the road.

Of course, perhaps a bigger question is why isn’t the United States forcing a peace treaty between Ukraine and Russia. The American military, as pointed out by Perino, is now warning that the U.S. is putting its own defense at risk because we are diminishing our own supplies.

McConnell’s stance is that it is all worth it. Biden says that he wants to support Ukraine for “as long as it takes.” What both men leave out is that the longer this goes on then the more people will die and the closer we will get to World War III.

Ukraine certainly has attempted to goad NATO countries into fighting directly on multiple occasions. For example, Ukraine claimed Russia hit a Polish village that wound up killing a civilian. That would have been an attack on a NATO ally. As it turned out, Ukraine was actually at fault. Then, last week, Ukraine claimed that a Russian missile violated Romanian airspace. Romania quickly came out and said no such thing happened.

Right now, there are a handful of American politicians calling for peace, including former President Donald Trump, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Florida Reps. Matt Gaetz, and Anna Paulina Luna.

None of their proposals are being taken seriously by the Washington establishment, despite public sentiment shifting in support of ending the war. Even if you want to continue supporting Ukraine, no evidence indicates that it’s what the American people care about.

In fact, according to Gallup, the number one “non-economic problem” Americans have right now is with “the government/poor leadership.” The second top non-economic concern is immigration. A dismal 1% of all Americans told the polling agency that the “situation” with Russia is their top concern.

Regardless of the stance one takes on the war — or the proper ways to end it — it is not encouraging that The Uniparty is focused on Ukrainians rather than Americans. It is not surprising, but still dismaying, to say the least.

For nearly a year now, the GOP Senate leader has made it clear that his main concern is Ukraine — not America. In May, he told reporters, “I think we all agree the most important thing going on in the world right now is the war in Ukraine.” In December, he added, “Providing assistance for Ukrainians to defeat the Russians — that’s the number one priority for the United States right now, according to most Republicans. That’s how we see the challenges confronting the country at the moment.”

Of course, both of those comments make a lot more sense when you realize he is talking about Republicans in D.C. — not outside The Beltway. With McConnell in charge of the GOP Senate, there is no opposition party to Biden’s foreign policy in Ukraine.
