In a recent interview with The Playlist to promote “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, assured the skeptical LGBT activists that future films will feature characters who are openly homosexual on screen.
“When are we getting a Gay, Bi, LGBTQ, out character in the MCU?” the interviewer asked. “Is it even in the works?”
Feige answered in the affirmative, adding that there will be new LGBT characters and at least one previously-established character who would come out of the closet. This follows previous comments made by Feige in 2015 when he told Collider that audiences will see an LGBT superhero sometime in the next decade.
The words could be genuine or just lip-service to appease mounting pressure from the likes of GLAAD, which is calling for a dramatic increase in LGBT representation on the big screen. Directors and actors on multiple Marvel films have tried to push LGBT representation on screen before being rejected on the cutting-room floor. It is wholly possible that Feige knows such characters would not play well at the box office, especially internationally, and is left having to appease activists on the one hand while satisfying movie-goers on the other.
Several LGBT activists and entertainment journalists believe Feige is likely just trying to appease critics with no desire to deliver on his promise.
“Never EVER believe anything that #KevinFeige says,” entertainment journalist Grace Randolph said Monday. “He says yes to everything he’s ever asked because he doesn’t want any negative coverage.”
As noted by LifeSiteNews, Hollywood wants to have its cake and eat too regarding LGBT representation. They promote it everywhere on television with shows like “Supergirl” but refrain from it on big-budget films largely to appease the Chinese market, where films depicting homosexuality may be outright banned.
