Man With Baseball Bat Attacks Staffers For Rep. Connolly At His Office; Transported To Hospital With Injuries
Two staffers for Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) were attacked at his district office on Monday by a man armed with a metal baseball bat, according to the representative.
“This morning, an individual entered my District Office armed with a baseball bat and asked for me before committing an act of violence against two members of my staff,” Connolly said. “The individual is in police custody and both members of my team were transferred to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”
Connolly, 73, said that his focus was making sure that his injured staffers — a senior aide and an intern who was on her first day on the job — got the treatment that they needed, according to CNN reporter Manu Raju. Connolly, who said the aide was struck in the head and the intern was struck on the side, praised first responders for their promptness.
“I have the best team in Congress. My District Office staff make themselves available to constituents and members of the public every day,” he said. “The thought that someone would take advantage of my staff’s accessibility to commit an act of violence is unconscionable and devastating.”
“Intimidation and violence — especially against public servants — has no place in our society,” Sen. Mark Warner, (D-VA) tweeted. “This is an extraordinarily disturbing development, and my thoughts are with the staff members who were injured.”
