Police said the 71-year-old man initially detained after Charlie Kirk’s assassination admitted he falsely claimed responsibility in an effort to draw attention away from the real shooter.
Right after Kirk was fatally shot at Utah Valley University, George Zinn told police he was the gunman and demanded they shoot him, according to court documents. Investigators later determined that Zinn did not shoot Kirk, but charged him with second-degree obstruction of justice. 
In an affidavit filed on Monday, a police officer said that Zinn approached police and yelled, &#8220;I shot him, now shoot me,” after the Kirk shooting, <a href="https://www.fox13now.com/news/local-news/man-claimed-to-have-shot-charlie-kirk-to-allow-gunman-to-escape-police-said?fbclid=IwY2xjawM1jW1leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFhUzh0bjFiQ0ZSeFhqVDJGAR6fmazZSQxGlcChErALhawuPRdSbEUy1lsp3GHJz0C8X-gjFteZMkitB89WRw_aem_cksKQCEcALvMFWNjmuP2Rg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Fox 13 Salt Lake City. &#8220;I then started to escort George to a patrol car that was at the back of the venue. He continued to state that he shot the individual and to just shoot him,&#8221; a police officer <a href="https://kfoxtv.com/news/nation-world/man-accused-of-claiming-he-shot-charlie-kirk-to-give-real-suspect-chance-to-escape">said</a>.
Zinn later admitted he made the false confession “to draw attention from the real shooter” and said he “wanted to be a martyr for the person who was shot,” according to the affidavit.
Once at the police station, Zinn said that he wanted a lawyer, and the police told him that they did not believe that he shot Kirk, KUTV reported. 
&#8220;At that point he advised I am already going to be in trouble for saying I shot him. Even if I did not,&#8221; the officer wrote. &#8220;I did not ask him any more questions at that point.&#8221;
After being booked at the police station, Zinn was hospitalized for an undisclosed medical issue. 
Zinn is known in the Salt Lake City area for disrupting political events and has a criminal history dating back to the 1980s, The Salt Lake Tribune <a href="https://www.sltrib.com/news/2025/09/10/george-zinn-what-we-know-about-man/">reported</a>. In 2013, Zinn was charged with threatening to place bombs at the finish line of the Salt Lake City marathon. Zinn agreed to a plea deal in that case and was sentenced to probation. However, after he failed to meet the conditions, he was ordered to spend a year in jail, with credit for time served, according to the Tribune. Zinn was arrested again in 2019 after a protest in downtown Salt Lake City turned violent.
The man whom police believe actually shot Kirk is 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. Robinson is charged with aggravated murder and is set to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.

Congressional lawmakers will be warned on Tuesday about hospitals that may be promoting left-wing activism under the guise of benefiting their communities. 
The House Ways and Means Committee will meet to examine how tax-exempt hospitals have pushed diversity, equity, and inclusion, climate activism, and radical gender ideology. The hearing will focus on nonprofit hospitals that have spent money on political activities critics say have no community benefit. To keep their tax-exempt status, nonprofit hospitals must commit to providing a community benefit through charity and other initiatives. 
One of those who will testify before lawmakers is Will Hild, the executive director of Consumers’ Research, a watchdog organization that has launched numerous public awareness campaigns about the politicization of medicine. Hild will urge lawmakers to consider ways to require nonprofit hospitals to be more transparent about how they spend their money and how much their procedures cost. 
“Are programs that push a specific, left-wing political agenda being claimed as a community benefit? Without clear reporting requirements, Members of Congress and taxpayers cannot be sure what hospitals are using tax dollars to fund,” Hild will say,  according to a copy of his written testimony obtained by The Daily Wire. 
“This misprioritization of politics over patients distracts hospitals from their core mission and can compromise the quality of treatment and increase costs, which can put consumers in serious physical and financial danger,” he will add. 
Hild’s testimony also says that many hospitals have used the language of “community benefit” to cloak “partisan political activity.”  He will ask Congress to “require line-item disclosure and outcome measures for any equity spending that is claimed as community benefit.”
Much of Hild’s testimony will draw from a <a href="https://consumersresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/CW_Woke-Hospitals-Report-Final.pdf">June report</a> published by Consumers’ Research, highlighting “woke hospitals.” The hospitals in question included the Cleveland Clinic, Vanderbilt University Medical Clinic, Henry Ford Health, Memorial Hermann Health System, and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. 
“Our research highlighting nonprofit health systems promoting a political agenda is particularly alarming given their eligibility for millions of dollars in federal funding, and government-mandated savings programs in addition to the core benefit of tax-exempt status,” Hild’s testimony states. “This means taxpayers are often left footing the bill for hospitals’ political activism. American taxpayers are entitled to increased transparency and assurance that hospitals are using their money judiciously and that requirements such as community benefit are legitimately being met.”
The June report highlighted various DEI programs at the various hospitals. For example, the Cleveland Clinic <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20250124192742/https:/my.clevelandclinic.org/about/community/diversity/student-resources#diversity-pipeline-talent-management-tab">created</a>  “diversity pipeline talent management,” while Vanderbilt University Medical Clinic <a href="https://archive.ph/YAzMN">hosted</a> a lecture on “infusing DEI in our research programs.” 
In terms of climate activism, the report highlighted Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230616202702/https:/www.vanderbilt.edu/sustainability/2023/06/philips-and-vanderbilt-university-medical-center-unite-to-define-roadmap-for-decarbonizing-radiology/">initiative</a> aimed at “decarbonizing radiology” and the Cleveland Clinic’s <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20250214113325/https:/consultqd.clevelandclinic.org/how-cleveland-clinic-is-greening-its-operating-rooms">goal</a> of “greening its operating rooms.”
Several of the hospital systems have also pushed transgender procedures on children. For example, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/center-transgender-health/services-appointments/children-adolescents-and-young-adults">offers</a> cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers for children. From its official X account, Henry Ford Health, <a href="https://x.com/HenryFordHealth/status/1377244880636891144">said</a> that teens should be “allowed to transition” or their mental health would be harmed. 
Multiple of the hospital systems targeted by Consumers’ Research have rejected claims that they have pushed ideology. 
In a statement to The Daily Wire, Henry Ford Health said that it “respects and fully complies with all state and federal anti-discrimination laws. For more than a century, Henry Ford Health has been fully committed to serving Michigan&#8217;s richly diverse communities, providing health care services and employment opportunities to everyone. Our commitment to non-discrimination remains steadfast.”
The Cleveland Clinic also told The Daily Wire that it “is compliant with all state and federal laws and firmly refutes the numerous false and intentionally misleading assertions made by Consumers&#8217; Research. As a nonpartisan organization, Cleveland Clinic neither holds nor promotes any political agenda.”
The clinic said that its community benefit donations totaled $1.46 billion in 2023.

Hospitals May Be Pushing ‘Partisan’ Politics Under The Guise Of Community Benefit

President Donald Trump said he filed a $15 billion lawsuit against the “degenerate” New York Times on Monday for defamation and libel. 
The lawsuit targets the Times over three articles and a book written by its reporters, published before the 2024 election. The suit argues that the content, which criticized Trump’s business and political career, was maliciously intended to interfere with the presidential race. 
“Today, I have the Great Honor of bringing a $15 Billion Dollar Defamation and Libel Lawsuit against The New York Times, one of the worst and most degenerate newspapers in the History of our Country, becoming a virtual &#8216;mouthpiece&#8217; for the Radical Left Democrat Party,” Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115211918198289404">wrote</a> on Truth Social. “I view it as the single largest illegal Campaign contribution, EVER. Their Endorsement of Kamala Harris was actually put dead center on the front page of The New York Times, something heretofore UNHEARD OF! The ‘Times’ has engaged in a decades long method of lying about your Favorite President (ME!), my family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and our Nation as a whole.”
Trump added that the outlet has “been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!”
The <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.flmd.447437/gov.uscourts.flmd.447437.1.0.pdf">suit</a>, filed in federal court in Florida, names the book “Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success” and the following three articles: “The Star-Making Machine That Created ‘Donald Trump,” “For Trump, a Lifetime of Scandals Heads Toward a Moment of Judgment,” and “As Election Nears, Kelly Warns Trump Would Rule Like a Dictator.”
Trump claims that the content was intended to damage his business reputation, “sabotage” his 2024 campaign, and bias judges and juries against him. 
“The Book and Articles are part of a decades-long pattern by the New York Times of intentional and malicious defamation against President Trump,” the lawsuit says. “Defendants maliciously published the Book and the Articles knowing that these publications were filled with repugnant distortions and fabrications about President Trump. Defendants simply ignored their breach of journalistic ethics because the Book and the Articles would further the goals of the New York Times and its backers in the Democrat Party.” 
In addition to the Times, the suit names the book publisher Penguin Random House and the authors of the articles as defendants. 
Trump has previously won millions of dollars in lawsuits against ABC News and CBS/Paramount. He is also pursuing an ongoing defamation case against The Wall Street Journal over an article alleging he wrote a birthday card to Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump Files Massive Lawsuit Against ‘Degenerate’ New York Times

Vice President JD Vance said that there can be “no unity” with those on the Left celebrating or making excuses for the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Vance made the comments as he guest-hosted the Charlie Kirk Show on Monday from the White House. Vance said that the country can only come together once the problem with political violence coming from the Left is acknowledged and dealt with.
“I really do believe that we can come together in this country. I believe we must, but unity, real unity, can be found only after climbing the mountain of truth. And there are difficult truths we must confront in our country,” Vance said.
One of the “difficult truths,” Vance said, was that political violence was not a “both sides” issue.
“If both sides have a problem, one side has a much bigger and malignant problem, and that is the truth we must be told. That problem has terrible consequences,” he said, pointing to the assassination attempt of President Donald Trump and the shooting of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise back in 2017.
“By celebrating that murder, apologizing for it, and emphasizing not Charlie&#8217;s innocence, but the fact that he said things some didn&#8217;t like, even to the point of lying about what he actually said, many of these people are creating an environment where things like this are inevitably going to happen,” Vance said. “There is no unity with someone who lies about what Charlie Kirk said in order to excuse his murder.”

Vance encouraged people to continue calling out others on social media if they celebrated or mocked the death of Kirk. People from across the country, from airline pilots to university professors, have been disciplined over posts belittling Kirk’s killing.
“So when you see someone celebrating Charlie&#8217;s murder, call them out, and hell, call their employer,” Vance said. “We don&#8217;t believe in political violence, but we do believe in civility. And there is no civility in the celebration of political assassination.”
He said that the Trump administration would be working to “dismantle the institutions that promote violence and terrorism in our own country” and encouraged Americans to get involved politically.
“I can’t promise you this is gonna be easy,” he said. “I can’t promise you that all of us will avoid Charlie’s fate. I can’t promise you that I will avoid Charlie’s fate. But the best way to honor him is to shine the light of truth like a torch in the very darkest places.”
Vance concluded his remarks by pointing to the passage in the New Testament that talks about putting on the “full armor of God.”
“Let all of us put on that armor and commit ourselves to that cause for which Charlie gave his life, to rebuild the United States of America and to do it by telling the truth,” Vance said.

Vance: There Can Be ‘No Unity’ With Those Celebrating Charlie Kirk’s Assassination

FBI Director Kash Patel said Monday morning that DNA linked to the weapon believed to have been used to assassinate Charlie Kirk last week matches that of the suspected killer. 
Patel made the announcement during an interview with “Fox &amp; Friends,” where he gave an update on the investigation into Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University. Patel said that DNA taken from a towel wrapped around the rifle believed to have been used to shoot Kirk matched that of Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old man who has been arrested for killing Kirk. 
“I can report today that the DNA hits from the towel that was wrapped around the firearm and the DNA on the screwdriver are positively processed for the suspect in custody,” Patel said.

The screwdriver was found on the roof of the Utah Valley University building, where investigators say that Robinson fired a single bullet that killed Kirk as he was holding a campus event. Video footage released by law enforcement shows a man running across the roof of the building shortly after shots were fired. 
The rifle used in the fatal shooting was found hidden in the woods a short distance from campus. Ammunition was found with inscriptions related to anti-fascist ideology.  
“My job as FBI director is not to speak to motive, it’s to speak to the facts. And that’s what I’m going to do. His family has collectively told investigators that he subscribed to left-wing ideology and even more so in these last couple of years,” Patel added. 
Patel said that investigators had a text message where Robinson “claimed that he had an opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and he was going to do it, because of his hatred for what Charlie stood for.”
When asked why the message was sent to the person who didn’t take action, Patel said that the investigation was ongoing and that they didn’t have an answer yet. 
Patel also confirmed that Robinson was not cooperating with law enforcement. Investigators previously said that he admitted to his father that he had shot Kirk and peacefully turned himself in at the urging of his father and a family friend. Utah Governor Spencer Cox has said that the death penalty will be pursued if Robinson is convicted.

FBI Links Suspect’s DNA To Kirk Assassination Weapon

The FBI arrested two men over the weekend after they allegedly placed an incendiary device under a local FOX affiliate&#8217;s vehicle in Utah. 
The device was discovered beneath a FOX 13 Salt Lake City news vehicle in the suburb of Magna on Friday, and investigators determined that it failed to detonate after being lit. The suspects are Adeeb Nasir, 58, and Adil Justice Ahmed Nasir, 31. The men were booked into Salt Lake County Jail on Sunday and are being held without bail. 
They were charged with threat of terrorism, possessing weapons of mass destruction, aggravated arson, and possessing explosive devices. Adeeb Nasir was born in Pakistan and is an American citizen, <a href="https://iml.saltlakecounty.gov/IML">according</a> to his booking information. The name “Eddie Nash” is listed as an alias. 
&#8220;Due to the nature of the device and its placement, this incident constituted a significant threat to public safety,&#8221; Unified Fire Authority Investigations officer Jeffrey David Nelson said in an affidavit, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/salt-lake-city-fox-13-vehicle-targeted-incendiary-device/">according</a> to CBS News. 
During a raid of the suspects’ home on Saturday, the FBI, Salt Lake City Police Department, and the bomb squad, law enforcement &#8220;observed additional contraband and evidence of crimes outside the scope of the original warrant, to include firearms and firearm-related items, explosives and explosive-related components, illegal narcotics and associated paraphernalia,” <a href="https://www.fox13now.com/news/crime/fbi-arrests-2-after-incendiary-device-left-under-fox-13-news-vehicle">according</a> to Fox13. 
Neither man was supposed to own firearms due to previous drug use, according to court orders. 
&#8220;The FBI discovered what appeared to be potentially hazardous materials that could pose a threat to public safety,&#8221; the FBI, which is leading the investigation, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/utah-man-arrested-after-explosive-device-found-news/story?id=125564512">told</a> ABC News. 
FOX 13 Station Manager Leona Wood said that the outlet was &#8220;working closely with law enforcement and our risk management team, with the safety of our employees as our top priority.&#8221;
The incendiary device was found about 47 miles away from Orem, Utah, where conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Wednesday. Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested and is expected to face charges of aggravated murder and felony discharge of a firearm. Robinson&#8217;s arrest was announced Friday by FBI Director Kash Patel and Utah Republican Governor Spencer Cox.
