Major Sunday Shows Largely Ignore Trump Rape Allegation

For reasons not yet known, it seems that the latest allegation of sexual assault against President Donald Trump went largely ignored by all the major Sunday shows, according to HuffPost.

“The hosts of the most popular Sunday morning talk shows in the U.S. had the opportunity to ask their guests ― often a mix of high-profile Republicans and Democrats ― about [the latest accuser’s] horrifying claim and whether to hold the president accountable,” reports the outlet. “But the allegation went largely undiscussed by major TV networks on Sunday morning, clearing the path for yet another sexual assault allegation against the president to slip into the void.”

“ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox, and NBC ― the networks that make up the ‘big five’ of Sunday morning talk shows ― boasted major political players in their lineups that included Vice President Mike Pence and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.),” the report continued. “And yet not a single one of them was asked about Carroll’s allegation that, just days earlier, had prompted front-page stories and news alerts from almost all of the major media outlets.”

On Friday of last week, New York magazine released an excerpt from famed advice columnist E. Jean Carroll’s upcoming book in which she alleged that Trump sexually assaulted her at the fashion boutique Bergdorf Goodman in the 1990s. She claimed that Trump recognized her as an advice columnist and asked her opinion on lingerie shopping. Later, they ended up in a dressing room where he allegedly assaulted her. From the excerpt:

The moment the dressing-room door is closed, he lunges at me, pushes me against the wall, hitting my head quite badly, and puts his mouth against my lips. I am so shocked I shove him back and start laughing again. He seizes both my arms and pushes me up against the wall a second time, and, as I become aware of how large he is, he holds me against the wall with his shoulder and jams his hand under my coat dress and pulls down my tights.

I am astonished by what I’m about to write: I keep laughing. The next moment, still wearing correct business attire, shirt, tie, suit jacket, overcoat, he opens the overcoat, unzips his pants, and, forcing his fingers around my private area, thrusts his penis halfway — or completely, I’m not certain — inside me.

The lack of press that Carroll’s allegation received on the top Sunday morning shows over the weekend has not been lost on certain media figures. Joy Reid on MSNBC lamented on her 11 A.M. show that the story had not been the lead at various networks. “In any other universe, in any other presidency, in any other news cycle, E. Jean Carroll’s bombshell revelations against the sitting president of the United States would have been the lead story all week long,” Reid said.

Shani Hilton, deputy managing editor for news at the Los Angeles Times, discussed with CNN’s Brian Stelter how Carroll’s story sort of just “faded away” over the weekend.

“The day that [Carroll’s allegation] dropped it felt like it was very much a part of the conversation on Twitter,” Hilton said. “It was really blowing up ― I mean all day long. Two days later, it kind of feels like it’s faded away. And I think by the end of the day Friday, it really felt like here’s one more allegation in the long line.”

Speaking with Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC, E. Jean Carroll gave a rather strange response when asked if she would press charges against President Trump, who has emphatically denied her charge.

“I would find it disrespectful to the women who are down on the border who are being raped around the clock down there without any protection,” Carroll told the host. “They’re young women, they tried to come into the county. As you know, they’re here by the thousands. Mine was three minutes. I’m a mature woman, I can handle it, I can keep going, my life has gone on, I’m a happy woman. But for the women down there, around the world … it just seems disrespectful. it doesn’t make sense to me.”
