When the students of Souderton High School in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, decided to hold a midday karaoke fundraiser for their United Nations Club, they weren’t expecting to have their socks blown off by the sweetheart who keeps their sloppy-joes warm.
The event was designed for teachers at the school to sing to students during the meal-time hour but the teachers had a surprise up their sleeves. They knew the school’s dedicated lunch lady, 52 year-old Becky Alderfer, was a talented singer, and with a little pushing, they convinced the timid cook to go out their and give all she had.
That’s just what she did.
Alderfer dedicated the classic, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” to all her fellow lunch ladies. When she hit the first big note, the kids went from low chatter to roaring cheers in a moment reminiscent of Susan Boyle on Britain’s Got Talent. Pure chills.
In an interview with NBC10, Becky said of her song choice, “I thought it had a nice message and I felt like I knew it well enough that I could get through it,” adding, “I can count on my hand how many times I’ve done karaoke. It’s a little nerve-racking. It works if you can find a song you’re really familiar with; otherwise it might be a disaster for anyone!”
Well, you nailed it…
