Rather than mock SFGATE for publishing a ridiculous paragraph that criticized the revamped “Snow White” ride at Disneyland featuring a non-consensual kiss, thereby tacitly perpetuating rape culture, leftists over at the Daily Beast and on Twitter chose to instead mock conservative media for allegedly manufacturing outrage as part of its continued quest to fight the phantom enemy known as “cancel culture.”
As The Daily Wire reported on Monday, Katie Dowd, the managing editor for SFGATE, a website launched by the San Francisco Chronicle, wrote a review of Disneyland’s recently updated “Snow White” ride alongside Julie Tremaine. Though the review was mostly positive, the two felt it was entirely necessary to criticize the ride for featuring the iconic scene in which the prince awakens Snow White from her eternal sleep by way of a kiss:
The new grand finale of Snow White’s Enchanted Wish is the moment when the Prince finds Snow White asleep under the Evil Queen’s spell and gives her “true love’s kiss” to release her from the enchantment. A kiss he gives to her without her consent, while she’s asleep, which cannot possibly be true love if only one person knows it’s happening.
Haven’t we already agreed that consent in early Disney movies is a major issue? That teaching kids that kissing, when it hasn’t been established if both parties are willing to engage, is not OK? It’s hard to understand why the Disneyland of 2021 would choose to add a scene with such old fashioned ideas of what a man is allowed to do to a woman, especially given the company’s current emphasis on removing problematic scenes from rides like Jungle Cruise and Splash Mountain. Why not re-imagine an ending in keeping with the spirit of the movie and Snow White’s place in the Disney canon, but that avoids this problem?
According to leftists, however, this charge — from a major publication — suggesting that Disneyland dedicate more time, resources, and labor to removing this one scene that some feminists might find offensive was mere “mild criticism” and that conservatives were using it to gin up outrage and whip their MAGA hat-wearing simpletons into a panic.
“Fox News Finds Its Dumb New Outrage: ‘Woke’ Mob Is ‘Canceling’ a Snow White Theme Park Ride,” headlined the Daily Beast.
Matthew Gertz of Media Matters tweeted: “What are they getting mad about today? Here’s a ‘straight news’ segment about the purported cancelation of Snow White at Disneyland that is built around a single op-ed that criticized the ride.”

Transgender activist Charlotte Clymer tweeted: “‘People need to stop writing think pieces like the Snow White article so that conservatives don’t weaponize them as consequences of cancel culture.’ Listen, they’re going to find something to be angry about, regardless. Anger is the point. They’ll fabricate outrage if needed. That’s the whole thrust of all this. It’s their entire strategy for 2022: 1. Pretend everything you know and love in America is under attack by liberals. 2. Endlessly cover it rightwing media. 3. Fundraise and campaign on it. That’s the whole vision.”

Clymer wrote this after throwing a temper tantrum on Twitter when Caitlyn Jenner said biological boys should not compete alongside girls in women’s sports.
The charge that conservative media outlets manufactured outrage over the “Snow White” kissing controversy is also blatantly false, given that a simple Google search reveals media outlets such as the New York Post, Entertainment Weekly, the Daily Mail, Inside the Magic, and The Sun have all written about the story. As The Daily Wire also noted, SFGATE’s criticism does not exist in a vacuum. In 2018, professor Kazue Muta of Osaka University in Japan tweeted that both “Snow White” and “Sleeping Beauty” allow for “sexual violence.”
“The fairy tales of Snow White and Sleeping Princess, ‘The princess woke up from a long sleep with a prince’s kiss,’ are also quasi-obscene crimes of sexually acting against an unconscious partner, if you think calmly. I think there is a reaction that ‘I don’t have such a dream,’ but on the contrary, I would like you to realize that such a fairy tale allows sexual violence,” she said.
