President Joe Biden is essentially running neck-and-neck in hypothetical 2024 general election matchups with former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, according to the Real Clear Politics polling average.

Biden leads Trump, who is the current frontrunner in the Republican primary, by less than one percentage point (44.9% to 44.0%) after the average of the latest polls released last month were factored in by RCP. In 13 polls conducted during July, Biden led Trump by slight margins in seven of them, Trump led Biden in two, and they tied in four. The newest poll, conducted by Morning Consult, put Biden ahead of Trump 44% to 41%, while a New York Times/Siena poll conducted just before Morning Consult’s had the two candidates tied 43% to 43%.

The sitting president is also neck-and-neck in a hypothetical matchup against Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who currently sits in second place in the GOP primary. According to the RCP average, Biden leads DeSantis 44.7% to 42.7%. Of seven polls taken in July between the two candidates, Biden beat DeSantis in five of them — which were mostly Morning Consult polls — and DeSantis beat Biden in two of them, a Marquette poll and a Harvard/Harris poll.

Biden’s job approval comes in at a dismal 42%, according to the RCP average as Republicans on Capitol Hill continue to investigate his son Hunter and have connected Hunter’s shady foreign business dealings to his father’s influence. The 80-year-old president also faces constant criticism and concern, even from within his party, over his fitness for office. Last weekend, Biden began a 10-day beach vacation as the House investigation into Hunter heated up.

Trump remains the frontrunner for now while DeSantis continues to be in clear second place. No other candidates poll anywhere near double digits, according to The New York Times/Siena poll, which is rated by FiveThirtyEight as the top poll in the nation. The poll shows a dramatic drop off after DeSantis with the next closest candidates barely registering with voters as former Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley all sit at 3%. The remaining candidates all sit at 2% or less.

While Trump appears to be dominant at the moment with just over half of the vote in The New York Times/Siena poll, the poll showed that nearly half of the respondents who chose Trump in the poll — 46% — say that they are “considering other candidates.”
