A Las Vegas newspaper published an editorial blaming “right-wing” extremism for the attempted shooting of a mayoral candidate in Louisville, Kentucky, even after the suspect was outed as a prominent left-wing activist.

The Las Vegas Sun, a daily newspaper in the Las Vegas Valley in Nevada, published an editorial Wednesday morning that in part blamed right-wing extremism for the attempted shooting of Democratic Louisville Mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg. The editorial, headlined “Escalating hateful rhetoric leads nation down a dark, chaotic path,” said that the attempted shooting “revealed the dangers of the talk coming from the right about civil war and political violence.”

“The alleged shooter, a 21-year-old political activist, was arrested near the scene and later charged with attempted murder along with four counts of wanton endangerment,” the article read. “While there’s been no indication yet that the activist had ties to any right-wing organizations, the shooting comes amid a rise in threats against politicians fueled by increasingly violent rhetoric coming from extremist Republicans.” The editorial pointed to a piece in The New York Times that showed a growing trend of violent threats being made to members of Congress. The Times reviewed 75 indictments against individuals who made threats against lawmakers but noted that those indictments were not limited by simple partisanship. Threats were made by constituents across the political spectrum toward lawmakers of both parties.

But the editorial was published Wednesday morning, hours after it had been revealed that the suspect in the attempted shooting, Quintez Brown, was a left-wing activist. RealClearPolitics Co-Founder and President Tom Bevan first pointed out the article on Twitter. “Holy f***, @LasVegasSun,” Bevan wrote. “This editorial was written after the alleged shooter, Quintez Brown, was identified as a left-wing BLM activist.”

The Daily Wire reported Tuesday that Brown, who described himself as a “racial justice activist working for ‘the total liberation and unification of Africa under scientific socialism,’” had been an MLK scholar at the University of Louisville and an opinion editor for Louisville’s student newspaper, “The Cardinal.” Brown is currently a candidate for Louisville’s Metro Council.

Brown’s activism began in 2018, when he appeared on MSNBC’s “AM Joy” with Joy Reid as a member of a “March For Our Lives” anti-gun violence protest in Louisville. He was also involved in the nationwide racial justice protests during the summer of 2020. As The Daily Wire also reported Tuesday, Brown met last week with a representative from “Lion of Judah,” a black nationalist militia group that believes black people are the true “chosen people” of God, not the Jews, and has ties to the anti-semitic Black Hebrew Israelites. Brown appeared to encourage his Instagram followers to join the group.

Brown also has a history of promoting radical black activists like Kwame Ture and Assata Shakur on Instagram and Twitter. The Daily Wire reported:

In December, Brown announced his candidacy to represent District 5 on the Louisville Metro Council with a quote from Kwame Ture.

“‘Frederick Douglass said that the youth should fight to be leaders today, because the men who run this country are sick.’ – Kwame Ture,” Brown said via Twitter alongside a campaign video …

Brown’s Instagram page is also littered with multiple posts to Ture, including one from 1977 promoting Pan-Africanism, the socialist movement promoted by Ture arguing that all descendants from African based nations should unite around their racial history.  …

Just last week, Brown also shared a quote from Assata Shakur, a black nationalist and convicted murderer found guilty of killing State Trooper Werner Foerster during a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike in 1973.

In February, Brown also tweeted, “Louisville’s ‘criminal justice system’ is the only infrastructure that is constantly funded and reinforced by the bipartisan white power structure. The intrinsic violence of the jails and the police upholds our racial and economic disparities and our leaders are COMPLICIT.”

Brown is currently out of jail after posting $100,000 bail, thanks to a bail fund created by Black Lives Matter Louisville.
