Moderate Republican Senator Susan Collins (ME) has once again been inundated with nasty, threatening voicemail messages from left-wingers, this time from anti-Trump impeachment backers.
Collins is no stranger to left-wing pressures. In September, the Republican was sent a barrage of similar messages from opponents of then-Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Still, Collins refused to be intimidated and ultimately voted to confirm Mr. Kavanaugh to the highest court.
According to The Wall Street Journal, at least one of the pro-impeachment messages was so threatening that it merited “a referral to law enforcement.”
Here’s a sample of the some of the messages (that were tame enough to print) released from the senator’s office, via the Journal:
Male voice: “Wow, what a vile piece of garbage you are, Susan Collins. Sorry. But those of us with a brain in the United States, which is about more than half the country, see exactly what the President did. . . . I sure hope you didn’t breed. I sure hope you don’t have children or grandchildren, because their future is [expletive].”
Female voice: “You’re going to lose, Susan Collins. You’re going to lose. You’re just a little b— for Donald Trump. [Expletive] you.”
Female voice: “Why are you obstructing justice? Is it because you want to go to hell? Are you in some kind of satanic cult? I don’t understand why you’re doing the devil’s work. . . . Why are you so corrupt? Oh, right, because you’ve always been a stupid, dumb b—.”
Male voice: “You’re a half-pint little [expletive] cross-eyed [expletive] with a voice impediment. . . . You’re a disgrace—a disgrace—to this country, not just to the Senate, but to your country. You’re a traitor.” More profanity.
As noted by The Daily Wire in September, Collins said left-wing activists were trying to bribe her over her Kavanaugh vote.
The executive director of The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), Kendra Arnold, said at the time that the online crowdfunding campaign targeting Collins was an attempt to “corrupt a member of Congress.”
“I think this is one of those things where it’s very obvious that outside influence is being used in an attempt to corrupt a member of Congress,” said Arnold. “We expect them to act on merit and it’s pretty clear no matter where you lean politically that this is absolutely an act of bribery and corruption.”
Citing a FACT report, Collins “reported receiving threatening calls and letters as well as more than 3,000 wire coat hangers” from abortion supporters and Kavanaugh opponents, as reported by USA Today.
On Friday, the Senate, including Ms. Collins, will vote on hearing additional witnesses regarding the impeachment articles against President Donald Trump.
“Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has waffled this week, as to whether or not he currently has the necessary Republican votes to block additional witnesses,” The Daily Wire’s Josh Hammer outlined Friday morning. “Of course, the key prospective witness generating headlines, at this point, is former National Security Advisor John Bolton. The mustachioed man’s upcoming tell-all manuscript will, according to New York Times reporting last weekend, allege that Trump’s Ukraine money hold-up was done in anticipation of the 2020 election — and not in retrospective fashion to root out past corruption. If true, Bolton’s testimony could directly implicate which of the two plausible theories of impeachment, as outlined at National Review in October by Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro, is actually true. Not to be outdone, though, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), a lead Trump defender on impeachment, has also introduced a motion that would subpoena 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, his son Hunter Biden, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), and the Ukraine ‘whistleblower.'”
