Trump supporter and rap icon Kanye West revealed how his faith in Christ has saved his mental health.

According to an in-depth profile in the August 2019 issue of Forbes — “Kanye’s Second Coming: Inside The Billion-Dollar Yeezy Empire” — the famous rapper opened up about his struggles with bipolar disorder after he was diagnosed in 2016 and how “radical obedience to Christ” helped him through. From the article:

Rewind to three years ago, when West claimed to be $53 million in debt, just before canceling the back of a lucrative arena tour and checking into a Los Angeles hospital for over a week with symptoms of sleep deprivation and temporary psychosis. West credits his turnaround to religious beliefs (“being in service to Christ, the radical obedience”) —and, on occasion, to being bipolar. Call him creative, call him chaotic—just don’t call him crazy. Like some entrepreneurs with conditions like ADHD and Asperger’s, he sees his diagnosis not as a hindrance but as a “superpower” that unlocks his imagination.

Later in the profile, West admitted to being blessed by the “grace of God” for having healed in some respects. “I’m just blessed through the grace of God to go from tweeting at Mark Zuckerberg,” West said.

West had asked the Facebook founder for $1 billion to fund his artistic endeavors when he was $53 million in debt.

Kanye West has since been making his Christian faith more public with the creation of Sunday Service events, which include gospel music with no preaching. Speaking with Elle earlier this year, Kim Kardashian West said the services feature only music and have no sermon, referring to it as a “healing experience.”

“It’s honestly more like a healing experience for my husband,” she said. “It’s just music; there’s no sermon. It’s definitely something he believes in—Jesus—and there’s a Christian vibe. But there’s no preaching. It’s just a very spiritual Christian experience.”

Kim Kardashian added that people of all faiths are welcome to attend the (exclusive) Sunday Service, which have been attended by Muslims, Jews, and other faiths. “Kourtney’s best friends come all the time and they’re Muslim,” she said. “All my Jewish friends came on Sunday; they loved it. Everyone that comes understands it’s just a really healing experience with an amazing choir, and amazing messages about love to start off your week.”

Following the success of the song “Jesus Walks,” Kanye has maintained he believes in God and Jesus Christ. In 2014, while performing at a show in Australia, he proclaimed himself to be a “married, Christian man.”

“I’m not judging but I’m just going to tell you who I am. I’m a married, Christian man,” he told the crowd.

Following his support for President Trump, West also referred to himself as a proud Christian on Twitter. “We will change the world. God is on my side. I am a Christian. I am a tax payer. I am myself. God is with us,” he wrote.

Contrary to those who accused him of performing a stunt, Kanye West has not wavered on his support for President Trump, or at least support for those who support him. In an interview with David Letterman earlier this year, West even said that liberals “bully” Trump supporters unfairly.
