Kansas City Chiefs Defensive Lineman Has Seizure, Goes Into Cardiac Arrest During Meeting

A defensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs went into cardiac arrest on Thursday after suffering a seizure during a team meeting.

Defensive end BJ Thompson, a 25-year-old who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Stephen F. Austin State University, suffered the medical emergency during a special teams meeting.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero posted on X: “The Chiefs canceled all team activities today after a backup defensive lineman had a seizure in a special teams meeting and went into cardiac arrest, per sources.”

“The team’s medical staff worked quickly, an ambulance was called and the player is currently in stable condition,” he added.

The American Heart Association responded to the incident by posting on X: “Wishing @Chiefs DT BJ Thompson a full recovery following his cardiac arrest during a team meeting earlier today. We’re grateful for the Chiefs’ medical staff that responded quickly before an ambulance arrived.”

The incident comes a year and a half after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed during a football game against the Cincinnati Bengals in January 2023 after suffering a cardiac arrest following a hit that he took. Hamlin was eventually able to return to the football field the following season after spending time in the hospital.
