Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) stared down and scolded Vice President Mike Pence during Wednesday night’s debate for interrupting her talk about taxes.
The senator claimed that a Biden administration would not raise taxes on anyone earning less than $400,000, though Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has stated numerous times that he will proudly revoke the Trump tax cuts.
Harris said she wanted the debate to be “based on fact and truth” — an apparent hit at Pence — and added that Biden “will not raise taxes on anybody who makes less than $400,000 a year.”
Pence chimed in, “He (Biden) said he’s gonna repeal the Trump tax cuts.”
“Mr. Vice President, I’m speaking,” Harris said, staring at Pence. “I’m speaking,” she added, staring at the VP again.
“Well,” Pence retorted, “be important if you said the truth.”
The VP took over as Harris laughed: “Joe Biden has said twice during the debate last week that he’s gonna repeal the Trump tax cuts,” Pence said. “That was tax cuts that gave the average working family $2,000 in a tax break every single year.”
“That is, that is absolutely not true,” claimed Harris.
“That’s the math,” Pence pushed back again, posing, “Is he only gonna repeal part of the Trump tax cuts?”
Holding her hand up at Pence, Harris stated, “If you don’t mind letting me finish, we can then have a conversation.”
“Please,” Pence offered.
The California senator then stated exactly what she said earlier, without elaborating on Pence’s push-back: “Joe Biden will not raise taxes on anyone that does not make less than $400,000 a year.”
Later into the debate, Pence continued to hit Harris using her “own set of facts,” pushing back on the senator’s claim that a Biden administration would not ban fracking.
“You are entitled to your opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts,” he said to Harris. “You yourself said on multiple occasions while you were running for president that you would ban fracking. Joe Biden looked a supporter in the eye and pointed and said, I guarantee — I guarantee that we will abolish fossil fuels. … They (Harris and Biden) have a $2 trillion version of the Green New Deal [that USA TODAY] said wasn’t very different from the original Green New Deal.”
As noted by The Daily Wire, the journalist moderating the debate opened with a loaded question about the novel coronavirus, framing the virus as out of control at the hands of the Trump administration.
“The coronavirus is not under control,” moderator Susan Page, USA TODAY’s Washington bureau chief, emphatically stated before reading off statistics of positive cases and ignoring plummeting hospitalization numbers.
Teeing up Harris, Page then asked the California senator what a Biden administration would do differently to combat the virus.
Harris, who did not lay out the restrictions a Biden administration would implement in her allotted two-minutes, slammed the Trump administration for allegedly keeping information from the American people and being slow to the draw when it came to their response.
Page, again, went after the Trump administration, asking Mr. Pence how he can “expect” the American people to follow safety regulations she accused the White House of not following, referencing the Rose Garden ceremony for Supreme Court justice nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett, which was notably held outdoors.
