Vice President Kamala Harris appeared to stop just short of saying that children should be the federal government’s responsibility during her Monday evening appearance with comedian Seth Meyers.
Harris joined the host of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and at one point during the interview, she argued that the government had to prioritize climate change if it were serious about prioritizing the children.

“Truly, when you, you know, when you see our kids, and I truly believe that they are our children,” Harris said waving her arms in a circular motion to indicate that “our” meant “everyone’s.”
“They are the children of our country, of our communities, I mean, our future is really bright if we prioritize them, and therefore prioritize the climate crisis and the need to address it,” she continued.
Harris, who was tapped just after President Joe Biden’s inauguration to lead the administration’s efforts in addressing illegal immigration, also took the opportunity while talking to Meyers to attack Republican governors like Ron DeSantis (FL) and Greg Abbott (TX) for taking matters into their own hands.

“We’re talking about people who have fleed great harm, who have fled great harm,” Harris said. “And they are coming here seeking refuge. And … talk about political theater, I mean, playing games with people’s lives, with their lives. There are mothers with sleeping babies getting off those buses. And I just think it’s an absolute dereliction of duty.”
Harris argued that when Republican governors sent migrants — via bus or plane — to self-described sanctuary cities, they were derelict in their own duties.
“If you’re a leader, participate in a solution,” Harris complained.
According to the most recent data, the United States will see a record two million border-crossers this year alone — a fact pointed out by NBC’s Chuck Todd during Harris’ recent appearance on “Meet the Press.”
Responding to Harris’ insistence that the southern border was “secure,” Todd pushed back. “We’re gonna have 2 million people cross this border for the first time ever. You’re confident this border is secure?”

Harris deflected, first blaming the crisis at the border on former President Donald Trump and then arguing that immigration could be reformed if Republican governors would stop “playing politics.”
