Kai Trump Reveals Surgery Setback: ‘Not How I Envisioned The Next Few Months’

President Donald Trump’s eldest granddaughter, 19-year-old Kai Trump, a freshman golfer at the University of Miami, underwent surgery for a wrist injury that will sideline her for several months.

“I recently underwent surgery to repair a wrist injury I sustained during my first tournament of the season,” she said.

She did not reveal the severity of the injury. It is Trump’s second surgery on her left wrist this year; she had a procedure in January to repair tendon and cartilage damage.

Trump, who plays Division I golf for the Hurricanes, thanked those supporting her recovery.

“Recovery will take time, but I’m incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by amazing people who continue to lift me up, encourage me, and remind me that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Having the right people by your side makes all the difference, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”

Trump said she initially hoped to avoid surgery but decided to undergo the procedure after consulting with her family, coaches, and athletic training staff.

“While I had hoped to avoid surgery, after talks with my family, coaches, and athletic training staff I know I made the best decision for my long-term health and my future in the game I love,” she said. “It’s certainly not how I envisioned the next few months, but sometimes the journey takes an unexpected turn, and I’m choosing to embrace this one with patience, and a whole lot of determination.”

Trump underwent surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She thanked her surgeon, Dr. Michelle Carlson, and her team, along with her teammates and coaches, for their support.

Despite the setback, Trump remains optimistic about returning to the golf course.

“For now, it’s all about healing, and trusting the process,” she said. “I can’t wait to be back with my team, doing what I love. I’ll be back before you know it, stronger and more grateful than ever.”

Golf runs in the Trump family. President Trump, an avid golfer who owns several courses, has praised his granddaughter’s skills while joking that she still has some work to do to beat him.

“She’s doing really well and she wins a lot of matches. And some day she’ll be able to beat her grandfather, but I’m not sure when that’ll be… it might be a long time.”

Her mother, Vanessa Trump, the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr., is in a relationship with golf legend Tiger Woods.

Wrist injuries are among the most common for golfers, and recovery from surgery can take months away from competition, depending on the severity and procedure.

Trump committed to the Miami Hurricanes in August 2024.
