A 26-year-old man was arrested Monday after he allegedly attempted to break into the Cincinnati home of Vice President JD Vance by shattering windows with a hammer. 
William Defoor was detained after midnight after the Secret Service said they found him trespassing at Vance’s Walnut Hills neighborhood home. He has been <a href="https://www.hcso.org/justice-center-services/inmate-search/inmate-detail/?id=1816987">charged</a> with vandalism, obstructing official business, criminal damaging, and criminal trespass. 
Neither Vance nor his family was at the home at the time of the incident. 
“I appreciate everyone&#8217;s well wishes about the attack at our home. As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I&#8217;m grateful to the secret service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly,” Vance <a href="https://x.com/JDVance/status/2008188525162721647">posted</a> on X. “We weren&#8217;t even home as we had returned already to DC.”
Vance added that he was skeptical of the news value of posting pictures of the broken windows at his home. 
“One request to the media: we try to protect our kids as much as possible from the realities of this life of public service. In that light, I am skeptical of the news value of plastering images of our home with holes in the windows,” he said. 
Defoor was allegedly able to make it all the way to Vance’s home undetected before Secret Service agents heard the glass windows breaking, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/vance-home-ohio-damaged-man-detained-c53c099124e36642e4dd4d86c38cf33f">reported.</a> A Secret Service vehicle was also vandalized. 
Defoor is being held at the Hamilton County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. He could face additional federal charges, authorities said.
“The U.S. Secret Service is coordinating with the Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office as charging decisions are reviewed,” said the Secret Service. 
Defoor’s criminal history includes prior arrests for trespassing and vandalism. In November 2023, a judge dismissed a criminal trespassing <a href="https://www.courtclerk.org/data/image_view_stream.php">case</a> after<a href="https://www.courtclerk.org/data/image_view_stream.php"> determining </a>that he was not competent to stand trial. 
In a vandalism case earlier this year, Defoor was <a href="https://www.courtclerk.org/data/case_summary.php?casenumber=%2F24%2FCRA%2F13827">sentenced</a> to receive mental health treatment. WXIX <a href="https://www.fox19.com/2026/01/05/suspect-arrested-after-vandalizing-jd-vances-cincinnati-home-report-says/">reported</a> that the case involved Defoor causing more than $2000 worth of damage to an interior design company.

JD Vance’s Ohio Home Vandalized By Hammer-Wielding Man

The Chinese Communist Party has escalated its persecution of Christians by arresting more prominent church leaders and putting them in detention centers, The Daily Wire has learned.
At least seven Christians affiliated with the Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu, a city in southwestern China, were arrested on Tuesday, according to the church. The arrests began in the early morning and continued until evening.
Early Rain Covenant Church is a prominent evangelical Presbyterian church that has earned the ire of the Communist Party for being part of China&#8217;s underground church movement. The arrests of the Early Rain members come just a few months after the Chinese government <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/daughter-of-detained-pastor-warns-of-a-coming-wave-of-christian-persecution-in-communist-china">rounded up</a> prominent leaders at Zion Church, another well-known underground church.
Those arrested included Li Yingqiang, an elder at the church whose home in Deyang was searched, and preacher Dai Zhichao. Dai was arrested at the church office after being told by authorities he was not allowed to leave his home, according to the church.
“At around 11:00 a.m. on January 6, he was taken under control at the church office, then brought to his home where it was searched, after which he went out of contact. It has now been confirmed that he is at the Jinniu District Case-Handling Center,” a message from Early Rain said.
Others who were taken by authorities included elder Yan Hong, preacher Wu Wuqing, the family of Ye Fenghua, and deacon Zeng Qingtao.
A woman named Shu Qiong was also taken by police and charged with “suspected provocation and police disturbance,” according to a source familiar with the arrests. A photo obtained by The Daily Wire shows the police showing up at her home.

One of those arrested was able to return home on Tuesday, according to the church. The church is currently locating lawyers for those arrested.
At the same time, police targeted the Early Rain Academy, a school operated by the church.
“The academy immediately organized teachers and students to evacuate and leave the site. Subsequently, the owner of the teaching site was summoned to the police station and pressured, and was informed that all items must be removed from the site by Friday,” the church said in a release.
The CCP’s targeting of Early Rain stretches back to 2018 when it began arresting prominent leaders, including Pastor Wang Yi. Wang was convicted in 2019 of subverting the government and sentenced to nine years in prison. While still imprisoned, he was just awarded a Democracy Service Medal by the National Endowment for Democracy.
Corey Jackson, who heads up the advocacy organization Luke Alliance, said the arrests were part of a broader pattern of targeting of unregistered churches. He said in recent months that more pastors were being brought into local police offices for “tea times” and told that they must register with the state or face harsh treatment.
“One person reported that they had been told by the domestic security police that churches, ‘house churches,’ are going to face complete prohibition. Participants will face imprisonment, and there&#8217;s going to be less pattern of warning, fines, and leeway,” Jackson told The Daily Wire.
Jackson said that the government really wants to exert more control over the churches, and make them register any online services they have before meeting. He also said the government doesn’t want parents educating kids in their faith if they are below the age of 18.
Jackson added that he would like to see the Trump administration put some pressure on China over their repression of Christianity.
“We need to apply pressure on China with human rights,” he said. “We must continue not to just be transactional in our approach with China, but to also recognize that China is the one of the worst abusers of human rights in the world.&#8221;

China Escalates Persecution Of Christians With More Shocking Arrests

President Donald Trump suggested Tuesday that Republicans should be “flexible” when it comes to the Hyde Amendment, a policy that prevents taxpayer funding for abortions. 
Trump made the comments during a speech to congressional lawmakers gathered at the Trump-Kennedy Performing Arts Center for the House GOP Member Retreat. While discussing negotiations over health care policy, Trump said that they may have to reconsider their strong stance on the policy. 
“You have to be a little flexible on Hyde, you know that. You’ve got to be a little flexible,” Trump said. “You’ve got to use ingenuity. You’ve got to work. We’re all big fans of everything.”
The Hyde Amendment has become a focal point in negotiations over proposed extensions of Obamacare subsidies. Most Republicans have said that any extension of health care subsidies is a non-starter if the Hyde Amendment is not applied. 
“Taxpayer $ should never be used to fund abortion &amp; I’m opposed to any plan that doesn’t include strong protections for the Hyde amendment,” Montana GOP Senator Steve Daines <a href="https://x.com/SteveDaines/status/1998421111311331736">said</a> last month on X. 
When passed by Democrats, Obamacare <a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/pub-attachments/dae9be74-4af9-428b-8e50-89d7652acc26.pdf">did not</a> include the Hyde Amendment and allowed some taxpayer funding for abortions. Historically, the Hyde Amendment has been attached to the Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations Act, banning funding for abortions and health insurance plans that cover abortions in their policies. 
Trump’s suggestion quickly drew criticism from major pro-life groups like Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. 
“For decades, opposition to taxpayer funding of abortion and support for the Hyde Amendment has been an unshakeable bedrock principle and a minimum standard in the Republican Party. To suggest Republicans should be ‘flexible’ is an abandonment of this decades-long commitment. If Republicans abandon Hyde, they are sure to lose this November,” said SBA President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “President Trump and congressional Republicans must follow through, not abandon, this commitment.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for clarification on the president’s comments. 
Alabama Republican Rep. Robert Aderholt on Tuesday suggested that he would not compromise on the Hyde Amendment. 
“The Hyde Amendment has saved over 2.6 million innocent lives,” he said. “My commitment to these protections is unchanging.”
Upon taking office, Trump <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/enforcing-the-hyde-amendment/">signed</a> an executive order last January to enforce the Hyde Amendment and crack down on taxpayer funding for abortion. 
“The previous administration disregarded this established, commonsense policy by embedding forced taxpayer funding of elective abortions in a wide variety of Federal programs,” Trump wrote. “It is the policy of the United States, consistent with the Hyde Amendment, to end the forced use of Federal taxpayer dollars to fund or promote elective abortion.”
In recent weeks, pro-life groups have pushed for the Trump administration to reverse Biden-era rules at the FDA that allowed abortion pills to be sent through the mail with no in-person doctor visits. The mail-in abortions have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/despite-dobbs-more-babies-are-still-being-aborted-in-the-united-states">fueled</a> a rise in abortions despite the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court.

Trump Says Republicans Should Be ‘Flexible’ On Rule That Bars Taxpayer-Funded Abortions

The Department of Health and Human Services will freeze $10 billion in funding for multiple welfare programs in five blue states over fraud concerns. 
HHS will pause funding for programs that provide childcare and food assistance in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York as officials probe whether the benefits are being illegally funneled to non-citizens. The specific programs being halted in those states are the Child Care Development Fund, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, and the Social Services Block Grant program.
“Democrat-led states and governors have been complicit in allowing massive amounts of fraud to occur under their watch,” <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/06/us/politics/child-care-funding-cuts-trump.html">said</a> HHS spokesman Andrew Nixon. “Under the Trump administration, we are ensuring that federal taxpayer dollars are being used for legitimate purposes.”
The states were notified of the pause in letters sent out by HHS on Monday. New York Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said that the impending freeze was motivated by politics. 
“Trump is threatening to freeze child care funding in New York and targeting our children for political retribution. It’s immoral and indefensible,” she wrote on X. 
The Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) is a partnership program funded by the federal government and the states that provides financial assistance to low-income families to help them care for their children while they work or attend school. 
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a federally funded, state-administered <a href="https://www.usa.gov/welfare-benefits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">program</a> that provides cash assistance to low-income families for food, housing, home energy, and child care. 
The Social Services Block Grant is a program that provides funds to states, which they then allocate to various welfare programs. 
The freeze was first <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/01/05/us-news/trump-freezes-10b-in-funding-to-five-blue-states-for-child-care-social-services-over-fraud-fears/">reported</a> by the New York Post, which noted that the pause will impact $7.35 billion in TANF funds, $2.4 billion in CCDF funds, and $869 million in Social Services Block Grant funds. 
The Trump administration has recently increased scrutiny on states like Minnesota and California over alleged widespread fraud. Last week, HHS paused all childcare payments to the state of Minnesota while it investigates allegations that millions of taxpayer dollars have been funneled to fraudulent daycares across the state throughout the past ten years.

“California, under Governor Gavin Newscum, is more corrupt than Minnesota, if that’s possible??? The Fraud Investigation of California has begun,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Trump Admin Freezes Welfare Funds To Five Blue States Over Fraud Concerns

President Donald Trump said the United States could get Venezuela’s oil industry back on track in less than 18 months, but that rebuilding the heavily degraded infrastructure would require significant investment. 
Trump said “very large” American oil companies would invest billions of dollars to repair the country’s oil fields, adding in a Monday interview with NBC News that the U.S. government could reimburse companies. He said the process could be completed in less than a year and a half. 
&#8220;I think we can do it in less time than that, but it&#8217;ll be a lot of money,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-says-us-not-war-venezuela-rcna252427">said</a>. &#8220;A tremendous amount of money will have to be spent and the oil companies will spend it, and then they’ll get reimbursed by us or through revenue.&#8221;
After announcing the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, Trump said the country&#8217;s oil industry had been a “bust,” producing only a fraction of its potential output. 
Trump has not specified which oil companies would invest, but said he has spoken to several that are interested. He said that restoring oil production in Venezuela would benefit Americans by lowering energy costs. 
While Venezuelan oil production once reached 3.5 million barrels per day, it drastically <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/01/06/world-news/venezuelas-oil-industry-is-in-shambles-after-decades-of-socialism/">declined </a>in 2007 after the industry was nationalized under former Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez. It is estimated that Venezuela’s oil reserves account for about 17% of the world’s supply, according to the New York Post. 
In the same interview with NBC, Trump said that there likely wouldn’t be an election in Venezuela in the next month. 
&#8220;We have to fix the country first. You can’t have an election. There’s no way the people could even vote,&#8221; he said. &#8220;No, it’s going to take a period of time. We have to nurse the country back to health.&#8221;
Trump said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, and Vice President JD Vance would oversee his administration&#8217;s involvement in Venezuela.
Trump and senior administration officials said the United States is not at war with Venezuela.
&#8220;No, we’re not,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;We’re at war with people that sell drugs. We’re at war with people that empty their prisons into our country and empty their drug addicts and empty their mental institutions into our country.&#8221;

Trump Predicts Quick, But Expensive Venezuela Oil Rebuild: ‘We Have To Nurse The Country Back’

The Trump administration moved to end a Biden-era rule on Monday it said created a fraud-friendly environment for daycare providers seeking federal funds. 
The Department of Health and Human Services proposed a new rule that will reverse regulations that required agencies to distribute government funds to daycare providers based on enrollment, not attendance, and before any care was delivered. HHS said the rule opened up the door for widespread fraud, including the kind currently under investigation in Minnesota. 
“Congress appropriated this funding to support working families and ensure children have safe places to grow and learn,” <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/press-room/hhs-close-biden-era-loophole-states-pay-child-care-providers-without-counting-attendance.html">said</a> HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “Loopholes and fraud diverted that money to bad actors instead. Today, we are correcting that failure and returning these funds to the working families they were meant to serve.”
Last week, HHS paused all childcare payments to the state of Minnesota while it investigates allegations that millions of taxpayer dollars have been funneled to fraudulent daycares across the state throughout the past ten years. 
“Paying providers upfront based on paper enrollment instead of actual attendance invites abuse,” HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill said. “In Minnesota, we’ve seen credible and widespread allegations of fraudulent daycare providers who were not caring for children at all. The reforms we are enacting will make fraud harder to perpetrate.”
The proposed rule from HHS will reverse <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2024/03/01/2024-04139/improving-child-care-access-affordability-and-stability-in-the-child-care-and-development-fund-ccdf">changes</a> made to the Child Care and Development Fund under President Joe Biden that required agencies “to pay providers prospectively and based on child enrollment.&#8221;
The New York Post, which <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/01/05/us-news/trumps-hhs-rescinds-biden-child-care-funding-loopholes/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">first reported</a> on the new rule, noted that about $19 billion was paid out under the Biden rules.
The new rule will allow states to make payments based on attendance data, make payments after care is delivered, and allow more parental direction over how the funds are distributed. 
The new proposal from Kennedy will reverse these changes and take effect after a 30-day comment period. 
The Child Care and Development Fund is a partnership program funded by both the federal government and the states that gives financial assistance to low-income families to provide care for their kids while they work or attend school. 
The Trump administration has multiple ongoing investigations into suspected fraud throughout Minnesota, including at daycare centers and other government-funded programs.
