Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) campaign fired off a fundraising email about the Homeland Security raid on her Washington, D.C., home on Monday, asking supporters for donations amid the federal investigation.
“Stand with Ilhan Omar,” a screenshot of the email obtained by NewsNation read.
“Donald Trump and DHS have opened a baseless, partisan investigation into Ilhan Omar, and she needs us by her side as they escalate their attacks,” the email added.
The message then went on to encourage supporters to “chip in whatever you can to make sure Ilhan can beat Trump and keep fighting for our progressive values in Congress.”
Homeland Security Investigations, a component of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), executed the raid Monday morning as part of an investigation into immigration documents completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child, according to Fox News.
The raid was carried out pursuant to a court-authorized search warrant, the Justice Department said.
Omar claimed that the Trump administration was targeting her over politics.
“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation,” Omar wrote on X Monday.
“I will not be silenced,” she added.
Vice President JD Vance dismissed Omar’s claims, saying Tuesday that he and the president try to stay out of such probes.
“I did not have advance notice her home was being raided,” Vance said. “I never — we try to run our Department of Justice in a fair and honest way. We try to let the law follow the facts rather than creating facts just to prosecute people we don’t like.”
“And because of that, I think the president and I largely try to stay out of Department of Justice investigations and other prosecutions. Now, I do know that there are some serious allegations against Ilhan Omar. We’re going to look into those, and again, if there is a real case there, we’re gonna follow the facts. If there’s not a real case there, then we won’t,” Vance added.
Omar came to the United States from Somalia as a child refugee in 1995. She secured American citizenship in 2000.
In 2009, Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen who some critics claim to be her biological brother.
The couple reportedly split in 2011 before finalizing their divorce in 2017.
