An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a man in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, sending him to a local hospital while a 5-year-old child sat in the back of his SUV.

The New York City Police Department confirmed the shooting, which occurred shortly after 4 p.m., outside 2 Marble Hill Avenue, and said the man “is currently conscious and receiving medical attention.” The NYPD added that it was not involved in the operation and was not on scene at the time of the incident. The neighborhood is considered “either part of Upper Manhattan or at the southern edge of the Bronx,” according to the New York Times.

According to the New York Post, the man was “a suspected migrant gang member.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE later confirmed via X that officers were executing a targeted operation to arrest a 28-year-old illegal alien from the Dominican Republic. DHS stated the suspect has a prior conviction for grand larceny, multiple arrests for assault and robbery, and ties to the Trinitarios gang, which mainly operates in the NYC metro area.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear, though DHS said an officer discharged his weapon during the attempt to take the suspect into custody and that officers immediately rendered aid. Witnesses and local media reported the man was shot in the neck while sitting in a silver SUV. The 5-year-old boy inside the vehicle was unharmed.

“When dangerous illegal aliens are released back onto the streets by radical sanctuary politicians, our officers are forced to make arrests at large in the community in unpredictable and dangerous environments,” DHS stated, adding that the suspect had been released by NYPD in December 2023 following a previous arrest.

Video footage from the scene captured armed federal agents, including one carrying a semi-automatic rifle, holding back a crowd of bystanders that swarmed the street to berate the officers. By Thursday evening, dozens of anti-ICE protesters had gathered at the scene and outside a nearby hospital where the suspect was being treated, chanting slogans and carrying signs, according to the Guardian.

The incident triggered swift outrage from local Democratic leaders, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani calling the shooting “unconscionable,” demanding the abolition of ICE. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), and New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul all called for immediate, full investigations into the federal agents’ actions.
