‘I Sure Hope A Certain Thing Happens’: Left Targets Clarence Thomas After Reported Illness

On Sunday, the Supreme Court notified the public that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas had taken ill, prompting some on the political Left to wish him ill, one way or another.

The Court stated:

Justice Clarence Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., on Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms. He underwent tests, was diagnosed with an infection, and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics. His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expects to be released from the hospital in a day or two. Justice Thomas will participate in the consideration and discussion of any cases for which he is not present on the basis of the briefs, transcripts, and audio of the oral arguments.

According to a 2007 biography of Thomas titled “Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas,” President Biden’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson, whose political leanings are far different from Thomas’, sat across from Thomas over two decades ago and thought, “I don’t understand you. … You sound like my parents. You sound like the people I grew up with.”

Recently, the activities of Thomas’s wife, conservative activist Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, have drawn scrutiny. In an interview published this month, Ginni Thomas acknowledged that she attended the Jan. 6, 2021, pro-Trump rally that ultimately led to violence in the U.S. Capitol, but said she stayed only a short time.

That has led some to question whether Thomas should recuse himself from some cases involving Donald Trump. When the Supreme Court recently turned down Trump’s attempt to withhold documents from the congressional committee investigating the riot, Thomas was the only justice to indicate he would grant Trump’s request while the legal fight continued.

Thomas has been the subject of recent discussion about the court. His wife, Ginni Thomas, recently discussed attending the rally then-President Donald Trump held Jan. 6, 2021, before a mob of his supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol.

As The Daily Wire noted, during his confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court in 1991, Thomas was infamously targeted by then-Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) and Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) over accusations against him of sexual impropriety against a colleague, Anita Hill.

Thomas fired back:

This is a circus. It’s a national disgrace. And from my standpoint, as a black American, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you. You will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the U.S. Senate rather than hung from a tree.
