Demonstrating a gap in knowledge of his “friend” Hillary Clinton, Howard Dean denied that the former first lady was charging colleges and universities upwards of $300,000 for approximately one-hour speeches. Alluding to perceptions of hypocrisy on behalf of Clinton’s exorbitant speaking fees for schools whilst campaigning on promises to lower tuition costs, Mika Brzezinski questioned the former first lady’s credibility on the issue.
“It’s these kids, who are gonna be strapped with $90,000 in debt, or $120,000 in debt, and [Clinton’s] making $225,000 in one hour. It’s a problem to these kids, who are gonna live for he rest of their lives trying to pay off college. There’s a big problem,” said Brzezinski
Dean interjected to shield Clinton from criticism with false statements.
“I don’t think people in America resent people who make money, and if they did, Donald Trump wouldn’t be leading all the polls,” said Dean, in contradiction to the class warfare rhetoric forming the foundation of his party’s political strategy.
“[Clinton’s] not making $225,000 for speeches in front of colleges, I can assure you. She’s not,” add Dean.
Scarborough interjected.
“Howard! It’s a matter of record!” replied Scarborough, calling for his producer to conduct a Google search for specifics on Clinton’s speaking fees at schools.
Blaming sexism, Dean claimed that Clinton was subjected to more scrutiny based on her gender.
“I’m gonna say this, and I’m gonna get jumped for it, but I gotta do it. If [Clinton] were a male and she were making these kinds of speeches, would people be criticizing her for making them? I’m just saying!” said Dean.
“Oh my God, that’s desperate,” responded Brzezinski.
Towards the end of the segment, Morning Joe producer shared that Clinton had charged University of Nevada, Las Vegas $225,000 for a speech in October of 2014. A month later, she charged $300,000 for a speech at University of California, Los Angeles.
Since leaving the White House in 2000, Bill and Hillary Clinton have been paid a combined $160 million, mostly from speaking fees.
