The conservative House Freedom Caucus picked Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) to be its next chairman, the group announced on Tuesday.
Good was elected on Monday night to lead the caucus, a group of a few dozen members known for clashing with GOP leadership on key issues. He is slated to begin his term in January 2024.
“It is my privilege and honor to serve as the next House Freedom Caucus chairman,” Good said in a post to X. “I am committed to keeping our promises to the American people and fighting to reduce government spending, secure our borders, and defend our constitutional freedoms.”
Good will replace Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) as chairman. He has been a part of the caucus since taking office in 2021 and served on the group’s Board of Directors as whip, per the group’s statement.

Over the past year, Good has taken a stand in prominent events. He was one of eight Republicans who voted with Democrats to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as speaker in October. Months earlier, in May, he endorsed Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis for president.
Good has voted in line with President Joe Biden’s position just 2.7% of the time, according to a FiveThirtyEight tracker, putting him near the far end of the spectrum of members who often disagree with the current administration.

At least one member of the House Freedom Caucus opposed Good’s rise to the chairmanship. Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) wrote a letter announcing he would not seek re-election to the group’s board while sharing objections to Good taking the top position.
“I ask that we consider how to best increase our influence while preserving our power to move policy in the right direction. I strongly feel that Bob Good as Chairman will impair that objective,” Davidson said.
Kevin Roberts, president of the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank, lauded the House Freedom Caucus for picking Good as its next president.
“Under his leadership, we are confident the HFC will continue to serve as a formidable force in upholding conservative ideals and combating misguided far-Left policies that threaten the fabric of our nation,” Roberts said.
