‘Holy Smokes, This Actually Happened’: PGA Championship Winner Reveals How Scottie Scheffler’s Fellow Golfers Reacted To His Arrest

Pro-golfer Xander Schauffele, who won his first major last weekend at the PGA Championship, revealed how he and his fellow golfers reacted to Scottie Scheffler’s arrest outside the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, on Friday.

Scheffler, the No. 1 golfer in the world, was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including second-degree assault of an officer — a felony — after he attempted to get past police who were blocking the road for an accident in front of the golf club entrance. Scheffler was stuck in traffic after a 69-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a shuttle bus in an accident that was unrelated to Scheffler’s arrest.

Scheffler released a statement following his arrest, saying, “a very chaotic situation” caused a “big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.” Schauffele joined Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast on Wednesday and said that he had a chance to talk to Scheffler after the arrest, adding that the world’s best golfer “handled it really well in Scottie Scheffler fashion.”

“He’s a good dude,” Schauffele added. “As soon as I saw it, I thought it was a prank then I saw it on the news, and I was like, ‘Holy smokes this actually happened.'”

“It feels like he’s going to come out okay from all of this,” Schauffele said. “It feels like [charges] are going to get dropped. I don’t know, but he took it like a champ.”

According to the police report on the incident, Louisville Police Detective Bryan Gillis was directing traffic when Scheffler “was driving eastbound to gain access to the course” and then “pulled into the westbound lanes where outbound traffic was flowing to avoid the backed up traffic.” The report alleged that Scheffler then “refused to comply” with Gillis’ instructions “and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground,” causing “pain, swelling and abrasions to his left wrist and knee.”

The police department is conducting an internal investigation into Scheffler’s arrest.

Scheffler’s arraignment, which was initially scheduled for Tuesday, was delayed until June 3, ESPN reported. The golfer’s attorney, Steve Romines, said Scheffler will plead not guilty.

Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship after hitting a birdie putt on the 18th hole on Sunday, told “Pardon My Take” that he and Scheffler are in a group chat with some other pro-golfers, which Scheffler’s friends used to poke some fun at their arrested buddy.

“The boys were heckling Scottie a little bit. Just enough,” Schauffele said.

“You gotta change the picture of that group chat to the mug shot,” Barstool host Eric Sollenberger quipped.

“Obviously, that happened,” Schauffele replied.
