Ava DiVernay, the director of the Oscar-nominated documentary 13TH, which focuses on the American prison system and propounds that slavery is being effectively perpetuated in the U.S. through mass incarceration, decided to protest Trump’s executive order suspending entry into the United States, as immigrants and nonimmigrants, for 90 days, of people from seven Muslim-majority countries.
DuVernay took the time before the Oscars started to honor the memory of leftist icon Trayvon Martin and his famed hoodie:
DuVernay has been contemptuous of Trump before; in mid-January, speaking with Oprah Winfrey and Van Jones at an event hosted by of Ted Sarandos, the Netflix chief content officer, and his wife, Nicole Avant, a former U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas, Jones recommended outreach to white voters in the Midwest who voted for Trump, but DuVernay didn’t agree, opining, “I’m challenged by the idea that we are not holding people accountable for their votes.” She added that Trump “represents violence.”
Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone, a Hillary Clinton fan, who had referred to Clinton’s November loss “incredibly painful,” signaled her allegiance to the abortion mill Planned Parenthood with a gold Planned Parenthood pin:
50 Shades Darker star Dakota Johnson echoed Stone with her own Planned Parenthood pin attached to her Gucci clutch, as PP proudly proclaimed:
