On Monday morning, former First Lady Laura Bush spoke to Today Show host Savannah Guthrie about the new, moving book, “We Are Afghan Women.” Mrs. Bush, almost always coy when it comes to weighing in on political matters, much like her husband has been since the moment he walked out of the White House, divulged some small details about the current political bloodbath on both sides of the aisle: now that her brother-in-law is out of the race, she and Mr. Bush are now “watching from the sidelines” although she is “full of opinions” about the tense primary.
“Jeb would have made a great president,” said Mrs. Bush when asked by Guthrie about the primary. “I’m sad that Jeb is out of it… I think he would have been a great president, but George and I are watching with much interest from form the sidelines. As you know, George is really determined not to make remarks about politics and so we are back to that side.”
President Bush has been notoriously quiet since leaving the White House, almost never commenting on President Obama’s rocky tenure and incessant Bush-blaming.
Guthrie, after stating how obviously intense this primary season has been, followed up: “I imagine you’re full of opinions.”
“I am full of opinions, but I don’t think I’ll tell them to you today,” said Mrs. Bush in typically evasive and classy Laura-fashion.
On Thursday, Mrs. Bush spoke to former Bush press secretary and Fox News contributor Dana Perino to discuss “We Are Afghan Women” at length. Click here for the complete, important interview.
