Three people were hospitalized after a gunman opened fire at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, on Thursday.

At 10:43 a.m., the Norfolk police began receiving calls that an active shooter was inside Constant Hall, one of the school’s academic centers. “We received information that people were being shot inside of the classrooms,” said Old Dominion Police Chief Garrett Shelton.

Shelton said the first officers arrived on the scene by 10:47 a.m. and that by 10:50 a.m., the suspect was deceased.

Shelton said there are three victims in the shooting. Shelton confirmed two victims were transported to the hospital for medical treatment and the third victim transported themselves.

Students were evacuated from the scene and the school has canceled all classes and operations for the day.

Shelton said the police department was notified the third victim transported themselves to the hospital after the initial announcement was made.
