GOP Senator Says Mayorkas Caught Lying About Laken Riley’s Alleged Murderer

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 18: U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas arrives for a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee hearing on the department's budget request on Capitol Hill on April 18, 2024 in Washington, DC. Mayorkas is back on the hill just a day after the U.S. Senate dismissed the articles of impeachment against him, voting on party lines that the charges did not meet the constitutional bar of high crimes or misdemeanors. Homeland Security Secretary was caught in a lie — about Jose Ibarra, the illegal immigrant who allegedly murdered Georgia college student Laken Riley — during Thursday’s Senate testimony, according to Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO).

Hawley posted video of the exchange — which came less than 24 hours after the Democrat-led Senate killed the Republican House’s articles of impeachment on Mayorkas — and cited the Homeland Security Secretary’s previous conflicting statements on the subject.

“Mayorkas, caught in a lie,” Hawley captioned the clip. “He said 8 days ago Laken Riley’s killer was paroled because feds had no reason to hold him. (False) He said 2 days ago he couldn’t remember why. (False) He said today he just wouldn’t talk about it. The truth: they let Laken’s killer in illegally.”

Hawley began by noting that when Mayorkas had testified earlier, senators who had asked him about the illegal immigrant accused of killing Riley had not had access to his parole file — but that had since been provided to them.

“And now we all know that the reason he was paroled into this country was because ‘lack of detention capacity’ — which, as you and I both know, is not a valid reason under the statute,” Hawley said. “And now that we know that for sure … now, suddenly, you don’t want to talk about it.”

Hawley pressed Mayorkas again: “This is extraordinary. It’s also a pattern with you. So let me just try one more time. Have you read the parole file?”

“Senator, I’m going to give the same answer, and let me —” Mayorkas began.

“Which one?” Hawley interrupted. “Are you going to give me the answer you gave Senator Britt? Are you going to give the answer you gave Congressman Bishop, or the answer you gave to Senator Paul, or do you want to try a fourth one?”

“Senator, I will not speak to the particulars of the case, given the pending criminal prosecution,” Mayorkas said.

“Yeah, well, I’m sure. Certainly — of course you don’t want to, because it is an absolutely damning indictment of your policies.”
