Pennsylvania Republican Senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz stepped in to help a 27-year-old passenger experiencing a medical emergency during a flight from Louisville to Philadelphia over the weekend.

When the male passenger collapsed during the flight, Oz and two flight attendants came to his rescue.

“I was sitting in my seat and a woman a few rows ahead of me yelled out that there was a crisis,” Oz recalled, according to Newsmax. “I ran to the bay and a gentleman had collapsed to the ground. He had been trying to get into the bathroom.”

“When I got to him, he was conscious but disoriented,” the 62-year-old said. “I asked the stewardesses to come help and get me something with sugar in it.”

After drinking some soda, the passenger “started to sort of come back to himself,” Oz said. “He had a very thready pulse, so low blood pressure, and when I gave him some of this beverage, he began to feel a little better.”

The retired cardiothoracic surgeon said the young man was likely dehydrated. “He had driven all night long to get to the airport and I’m sure he was dehydrated because, with fluids, his blood pressure came up,” he explained.

“People get dehydrated all the time on planes, especially because it’s high altitude and the air is drier,” Oz continued. “Make sure you drink enough water. Caffeine doesn’t work as well as water, because caffeine gets you to pee out whatever fluids you’re taking in. Just take water. … Especially because it’s summertime and it’s hot. I think that was part of what happened to this young man.”

“These flight attendants were very well trained, kept their calm and were able to help me perfectly,” Oz praised the attendants. “I want to applaud their professionalism.”

The medical professional won the GOP primary back in June and is set to face off against Pennsylvania Lt. Governor John Fetterman, a Democrat, in a November election for GOP Sen. Pat Toomey’s seat.

According to recent polling from Emerson College, Fetterman’s double-digit lead has slimmed down considerably, with the Democrat leading Oz by four points; 48% to 44%.

Fetterman, who suffered a stroke days ahead of the primary, has repeatedly nodded to drug decriminalization and monitored injection sites, as well as defended Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. The controversial DA is currently under investigation by Republican and Democratic members of the Pennsylvania House for allegedly neglecting to enforce the city’s laws.

Moreover, Fetterman provoked ire in 2013 by responding to what he believed was gunfire by pulling a firearm on an African American and detaining him until police arrived — an incident that has generated unease among black Democratic voters.

Oz, who had a successful career in the private sector, has taken heat from the Right over his past support of abortion and gun control.
