Google: Sorry About Labeling That Republican State Senator A ‘Bigot.’ Here’s Why It Happened.

In the last couple of days, a troubling trend on Google has come to light: For some reason, anti-Republican sentiment keeps finding its way into the search engine’s supposedly unbiased “knowledge panel.” For several days, Google told users that among the ideologies connected to California’s Republican Party is “Nazism.” Now, the world’s dominant search engine has been forced to apologize for labeling a Republican state senator a “BIGOT.”

On Thursday, reporter Colin Campbell pointed out a disturbing image posted by Google in its “knowledge panel” mini-bio on Republican North Carolina Sen. Trudy Wade:

Here’s a screenshot of Google’s bio sketch for “bigot” Wade:

Vice News, which had just called out Google a day before for linking California Republicans to Nazism, highlighted the “bigot” image on Friday. Here’s how Vice begins its piece:

Trudy Wade is a Republican state senator from North Carolina and an enthusiastic supporter of President Trump.

But if you search “Trudy Wade” on Google, the search giant displays an old photo in the “knowledge panel” of its search results with “BIGOT” superimposed in big red letters.

It’s just the latest example of Google not vetting the information that gets pulled into its “knowledge panels,” which are meant to give users quick information without them having to click through search results (often on other, non-Google websites).

In response, Google issued an apology to the senator and explained what went wrong: It had relied on a “student news blog” for its supposedly unbiased information.

“We apologize to Senator Wade that this image appeared in the Knowledge Panel in Search,” Google said in a series of tweets Friday. “Images that appear in the Knowledge Panel are either selected by verified users or are automatically sourced from sites across the web.”

“In this instance, the image was hosted on a student news blog. Upon being alerted to this issue, we immediately removed it from the Knowledge Panel,” Google explained.

“We encourage individuals with a Knowledge Panel to get verified to select their own image, which can help prevent this in the future. To get verified, click the link below your Knowledge Panel,” Google concluded.

Vice’s article on Wade came just one day after the outlet reported on Google’s similar smear of California Republicans:

Less than a week before the California primary, Google listed “Nazism” as the ideology of the California Republican Party.

In the “knowledge panel” that provides easy access to information next to search results, Google was showing “Nazism” as an “ideology” of the party as of Thursday morning. The word “Nazism” was hyperlinked to a secondary page that shows “Nazism” alongside other “ideologies” of California Republicans like “Conservatism,” “Market liberalism,” “Fiscal conservatism,” and “Green conservatism.”

Pressed for an explanation by Vice, a spokesperson for Google insisted that no one in the company manually added “Nazism” to the “knowledge panel” entry and stressed that the company does not manipulate that information for political reasons.

“Sometimes people vandalize public information sources, like Wikipedia, which can impact the information that appears in search,” the spokesperson told Vice in a statement. “We have systems in place that catch vandalism before it impacts search results, but occasionally errors get through, and that’s what happened here.”
