<p>President Donald Trump shared a historical view of prayer in the United States — dating back to before there even was a United States — in his remarks commemorating the National Day of Prayer on Thursday morning.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re bringing back religion in our country and we&#8217;re bringing it back quickly and strongly — because for America to be a great nation, we must always be One Nation Under God,&#8221; Trump began, sounding vaguely reminiscent of the late Ronald Reagan when he warned, &#8220;If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.&#8221;</p>

<p>Trump then went further back to a day of &#8220;fasting and prayer&#8221; that took place in the Continental Congress over a year before the Declaration of Independence was even written, as the men who would ultimately found the Unites States prayed for the men fighting for their liberation from British rule.</p>
<p>&#8220;As the American people turn to God in prayer, we continue a tradition older than our independence itself. Nearly 250 years ago on June 12, 1775, the Continental Congress appointed a day of fasting and prayer so that Americans fighting for their liberty could seek the help of the Almighty,&#8221; Trump said.</p>

<p>The president went on to reference a letter written by second President John Adams to his wife Abigail about his first National Day of Prayer, adding, &#8220;In a letter to wife Abigail, John Adams wrote, of his first National Day of Prayer, &#8216;Millions will be upon their knees at once before their great Creator, imploring his forgiveness and blessing and asking for his favor on the American cause.&#8217; Today &#8230; in the heart of a free and proud America, we rejoice that God answered those prayers.&#8221;</p>
