Former Utah congresswoman Ludmya “Mia” Love passed away on Sunday after a nearly three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. She was 49 years old.
Her family posted the news on Sunday: &#8220;Love Family: With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today. She was in her home surrounded by family. In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward. We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences. We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come.&#8221;

Love, a Republican, was initially diagnosed with the aggressive form of brain cancer — which also afflicted the late Senator John McCain — in 2022, three years after she left the House of Representatives where she’d served Utah’s 4th Congressional DIstrict since winning the seat in 2014. Prior to her time in Congress, Love served her community as the mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah.
After losing her 2018 re-election bid — by just under 700 votes — to former Salt Lake City Mayor Ben McAdams (D-UT), Love was hired as a CNN commentator and made several appearances on the ABC midday talk show “The View.”
She spoke about her prognosis with CNN anchor Jake Tapper in May of 2024 — when doctors advised her that she likely had 10-15 months to live — and she said that her faith was what kept her strong.
“I was looking for a cure in my faith and in science. Funny thing is, my patriarchal blessing said you will have a long and prosperous life, a rich and rewarding life, so long as you decide to remain in public service,” she told him at the time.
“Whether you are facing a cancer diagnosis yourself, or fighting a different battle, there is hope! For me, that hope comes from my faith and my family,” she added in a Facebook post. “Both have been a source of immeasurable strength, peace, love, and support. Every day, I thank God for my life and a family who give that life beauty and meaning.”
Things took a turn for the worse early in 2025, and on March 1, Love’s daughter Abigale shared heartbreaking news via X: “Hello Friends, I’m Mia’s daughter Abigale. Many of you are aware that Mom has been fighting GBM brain cancer. Sadly her cancer is no longer responding to treatment and the cancer is progressing. We have shifted our focus from treatment to enjoying our remaining time with her. I am building an archive of special memories with Mia. Please send your pictures, videos and memories to me at <a href="mailto:MiaLoveMemories@gmail.com">MiaLoveMemories@gmail.com</a>. Thank you.”

In the days that followed, Love was recognized by her state’s legislature in a citation.
“Mia Love made history as the first black Republican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Utah’s Fourth Congressional District from 2015 to 2019. During her time in Congress, Congresswoman Love tirelessly advocated for policies in tax reform, economic development and public safety, always prioritizing the well-being of her constituents,” the statement began.
The statement acknowledged Love’s service to her community both as a mayor and then as a U.S. Congresswoman.
“Congresswoman Love’s admirable leadership, commitment to public service and inspiration to future generations will continue to resonate long into the future. Despite her courageous battle with brain cancer, Mia Love exemplifies strength, resilience and unwavering determination, inspiring all who know her story,” it concluded.
