The House Committee on Ethics opened up an investigation into whether Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) violated the law during her campaigns in 2022.

Cherfilus-McCormick is under investigation for alleged violations of campaign finance laws, failure to disclose information, and a work violation during her 2022 special and general election campaigns.

A statement from the Ethics committee says that the congresswoman “may have violated campaign finance laws and regulations in connection with her 2022 special election and/or 2022 re-election campaigns; failed to properly disclose required information on statements required to be filed with the House; and/or accepted voluntary services for official work from an individual not employed in her congressional office.”

The committee voted unanimously to create a panel to investigate the Florida Democrat, which will be headed up by Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) with Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) as the ranking member. Rep. Cliff Bentz (R-OR) and Rep. Troy Carter (D-LA) will also be on the investigative panel.

“The Committee notes that the mere fact of establishing an Investigative Subcommittee does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred,” the Ethics committee said.

Jonathan Levin, a spokesperson for Cherfilus-McCormick, said that the congresswoman was working to “resolve” the inquiry.

“As the Ethics Committee said in its statement, the mere fact of establishing an investigative subcommittee does not itself indicate that any violation occurred,” Levin said. “Regardless, the Congresswoman takes these matters seriously and is working to resolve them.”

Cherfilus-McCormick first won election to the House in a January 2022 special election where she won 79% of the vote before winning re-election in November 2022 with 72% of the vote. She is a member of the Left-wing Congressional Progressive Caucus, where she serves as deputy whip.

She has been a critic of Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump. Earlier this month, Cherfilus-McCormick, along with other Florida Democrats, took aim at DeSantis over his push to remove sexually explicit books from Florida schools.

In August, she said that the indictment of Trump in Georgia, which many Republicans say is politically motivated, shows that “no American is above the law.”

“Over the course of 2023, the former president has now been indicted four times. Donald Trump is entitled to his day in court, but these latest charges are alarming and should by no means be considered part of a larger ‘witch hunt.’ Deeming them as such is not only inaccurate, but it threatens the very rule of law upon which our nation was founded. No different than the previous indictments, this one must also proceed without outside interference,” she said.
