Some Democrats are publicly criticizing President Joe Biden too much as the 2024 general election nears, according to Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA).
The first-term senator joined MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on Thursday to discuss the upcoming election and Biden’s standing in the pivotal swing state of Pennsylvania. After predicting a “difficult” 2024 race for the president, Fetterman said he’s baffled by the actions of some of his fellow Democrats.
“All kinds of Democrats [are] criticizing the president too publicly. I don’t understand why,” the senator said. “I don’t know what it’s in it for you to do that, whether you’re just chasing clout or you want to make it in the news or anything like that. But, if you’re not willing to just support the president now and say these kinds of things, you might as well just get your MAGA hat, because you now are helping Trump at this.”

Some Democratic strategists and lawmakers have voiced concerns about the 81-year-old Biden’s re-election campaign, most notably Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), who jumped into the presidential race to challenge Biden last October. Biden has also faced criticism from far-Left anti-Israel Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) over his response to the war between Israel and Hamas, with Tlaib even encouraging voters in her district to vote against Biden in the primary.
Late last year, Fetterman responded to criticisms of Biden made by Democratic strategist James Carville, who said earlier in December that Biden was on track to lose to former President Donald Trump.
“I’ll use this [as] another opportunity to tell James Carville to shut the f*** up,” Fetterman told POLITICO. “Like I said, my man hasn’t been relevant since grunge was a thing. And I don’t know why he believes it’s helpful to say these kinds of things about an incredibly difficult circumstance with an incredibly strong and decent and excellent president. I’ll never understand that.”
Fetterman has recently been praised by some on the Right for standing up for Israel and speaking out about the illegal immigration crisis. While the senator has suggested that the migrant influx is threatening “the American dream,” he remains loyal to Biden, whose administration has overseen a record number of border encounters.

“I believe there’s only one person that can beat Trump, and that’s Joe Biden,” Fetterman said at another point of his interview with “Morning Joe.” “Because right now he’s the only person in America that actually has beaten Trump.”
