Federal immigration agents raided the Washington, D.C., home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) early Monday morning as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
According to Fox News, the investigation centers on immigration documents completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. The Justice Department confirmed that Homeland Security Investigations executed a court-authorized search warrant.
“Today in the Washington, D.C., area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation,” a Justice Department spokesman told Fox News.
Omar was brought to the United States as a child in 1995 as a refugee from war-torn Somalia. She became an American citizen in 2000.
The raid comes weeks after border czar Tom Homan confirmed that federal officials were investigating allegations that Omar married her brother to commit immigration fraud, raising questions about whether she could lose her citizenship and face deportation.
Those accusations revolve around Omar’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen who some allege is her biological brother. The couple reportedly separated in 2011 and formally divorced in 2017.
“I mean, if someone committed [an] immigration violation and someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congresswoman or not, no one’s above the law, so I’ll leave it at that. We’ll let HSI, Homeland Security Investigations, continue the investigation,” Homan said.
Homan’s confirmation of an investigation into Omar came after Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said last month that Omar “married her brother to try to bring him into the United States.”
Attorney General Todd Blanche declined to comment when asked by The Daily Wire if Omar could be deported if she was found to have committed immigration fraud.
“I’m not talking about ongoing criminal investigations,” Blanche said. “And so, I’m not — I don’t have anything to say about your first question.”
President Donald Trump has long accused Omar of marrying her brother and has suggested she should be deported back to Somalia.
“I believe she married her brother, which is totally illegal,” Trump said at a rally earlier this year. “Although, it’s a lovely couple, actually, but it’s a little bit on the illegal side. ‘Darling. I love you very much. Goodnight, brother. Let’s go to bed.'”
