Feds Don’t Track Border-Surge Teens After Release

By  Aaron Bandler

A new report shows that the federal government does not keep track of illegal alien teens after they are released from immigration shelters.

According to the Migration Policy Institute, 77,824 unaccompanied illegal alien children have been released into the United States since Oct. 1, 2014. Over half do not come to their court proceedings, and 35 percent don’t attend their Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) orientation program, suggesting they’re not interested in becoming citizens and assimilated into American society. While many go to their parents, some are given to sponsors who are not screened, at times resulting in children being taken in by people with nefarious intent, including child molesters and sexual abusers.

The reason this is happening is that no government agency is in charge of keeping track of these border surge teens, which makes tracking their actions particularly difficult.

The Center for Immigration Studies provides some of the details that we do know, including some of these unaccompanied alien minors being involved in a gang-related murder. In fact, two of them were involved in the MS-13 gang. This is not an isolated incident, as Katie Pavlich at Townhall underscores, citing an internal Border Patrol executive summary that revealed that at least 16 unaccompanied illegal alien minors are documented to be a part of MS-13.

MS-13, also known as Mara Salvatrucha, is a horrifically brutal El Savadoran gang that originally began in California. Oscar Martinez at The New Republic describes how the gang operates:

Having problems with MS-13 or the 18th Street Gang means having problems with a criminal army. According to the Salvadoran Ministry of Public Security and Justice, there are some 60,000 active gang members in a country that has little more than 6.1 million inhabitants and barely spans 8,100 square miles. There are cliques of the main gangs in all 14 of El Salvador’s states. The state of Morazán has the fewest cliques with eight; San Salvador has the most with 216. The cliques—with names like Hollywood Locos Salvatrucha or Southern Tiny Locos—can be made up of adolescents armed with .38 caliber revolvers like the group of kids who killed Gerardo’s father, or they can be like the Fulton Locos Salvatrucha. When the police raided a Fulton Locos stronghouse, they found an arsenal, seizing more than ten AK-47s and M-16 rifles, as well as a dozen M-67 grenades.

On top of such firepower, the gangs have developed effective systems of surveillance and security, and they like to use these to humiliate the authorities. This past May, for example, the Salvadoran director of forensic medicine announced that a number of his technicians were extorted after entering gang territory to retrieve bodies.

You probably have read that El Salvador and Honduras have had the highest homicide rates in the world over the past ten years. But to put the numbers in proper perspective: In Mexico, when the violence caused by warring murderous organized crime groups like Los Zetas and the Sinaloa Cartel peaked in 2011, the country ranked only fourteenth for per capita killings, with an average of 22.8 homicides for every 100,000 inhabitants, according to the United Nations. Honduras, now ranked first, has 90 for every 100,000 people. El Salvador is right behind it. In 2013 alone, the gang violence of this frightened corner of the world claimed 15,328 lives.

Joining a gang isn’t something you can take back. Once you’re in, there are only two ways to get out: by dying or running. And merely joining is a nightmare: To become a member, you need to murder. In the last three years, the gangs have required aspiring members to kill somebody before they can join the ranks.

Already over 347,000 criminal aliens are at large in the U.S. because the Obama administration has a bad habit of releasing criminal immigrants under the guise of “prosecutorial discretion.” One would think that criminal immigrants with convictions of homicides, sexual assaults, and kidnappings would be a high priority, and yet the Obama administration is releasing many of them into the streets.

In addition, Department of Justice numbers show that about half of federal criminal cases were filed in border cities, and illegal aliens commit over 30 percent in some states.

Crime isn’t the only problem with these unaccompanied illegal minors roaming around the country. The fact that they aren’t showing up to court hearings as well as LIRS programs shows that they have no desire to assimilate. Assimilation is necessary for a country to preserve their society and culture. Princeton University Professor Dr. Douglas Massey writes, “The character of ethnicity will [be] determined relatively more by immigrants and relatively less by later generations, shifting the balance of ethnic identity toward the language, culture, and ways of life in the sending society.” Massey believes that this creates a form of “self-segregation.”

The scary thing is that the border crisis is still very real. Even though unaccompanied illegal minors and families have decreased this year as compared to the unprecedented influx in 2014, the illegals crossing the border know that they’re not going to be held until they have a court hearing, which of course many don’t attend, so they know they can stay and receive public benefits. Illegal alien households on average receive $24,721 in government benefits, and annually result in a $54.5 billion deficit for the federal government.

This is unfortunately what happens with a wide open border and lax immigration enforcement.

A three-judge panel began hearing arguments whether to lift a temporary hold imposed by a federal judge in Texas on President Barack Obama’s executive action seeking to shield millions of immigrants from deportation.”
