FBI agents executed a search warrant on the home and campaign office of Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) this week in connection to a reportedly wide-ranging federal investigation into international financial matters.

“The FBI on Wednesday raided Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar’s home and campaign office in Texas as part of a wide-ranging federal probe relating to the former Soviet state of Azerbaijan and several U.S. businessmen,” ABC News reported. “In recent years he has served as a co-chair of the Congressional Azerbaijan Caucus, and repeatedly met with Azerbaijan officials, including the ambassador of Azerbaijan, Elin Suleymanov.”

The report noted that a federal grand jury has been convened but that it was not clear whether Cuellar was the target of the grand jury investigation.

“At Cuellar’s home, located in the 8200 block of Estate Drive, federal vehicles were seen with cases and other items taken from the congressman’s house as over two dozen agents filed in and out of the residence Wednesday afternoon,” The Monitor reported on Wednesday. “By around 7:30 p.m., a group of agents loaded large bags, plastic bins, and a computer into a federal vehicle. Some agents appeared to be logging the items.”

The FBI released a statement confirming the activity, saying that agents were “conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity” and that they “cannot provide further comment on an ongoing investigation.”

Cuellar’s office released a statement on Wednesday evening, saying, “Congressman Cuellar will fully cooperate in any investigation. He is committed to ensuring that justice and the law are upheld.”

The report from The Monitor said that agents worked well into the night.

Investigative reporter Valerie Gonzalez noted that federal agents were also present at his campaign offices.

“Federal agents were also at the campaign HQ office this afternoon,” she wrote. “It wasn’t included in the FBI statement, but two of the vehicles seen there at 4:20 pm later showed up at the residence. An agent wearing an FBI jacket climbed out of one.”

Cuellar, who represents Texas’ 28th Congressional District, “serves as the only Texas Democrat on the powerful U.S. House Appropriations Committee,” his website states. “He is the Vice Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, while also serving on the Defense Subcommittee and the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies. Congressman Cuellar was named Chief Deputy Whip for the 117th Congress, where he works in a bipartisan manner to serve the American people.”

Cuellar has been an outspoken critic of Democrat President Joe Biden’s handling of the border crisis.

“The words that are spoken are not going to stop” illegal aliens from coming to the U.S., he said. “You got organizations, criminal organizations that make billions of dollars, and every time they bring somebody over here, they make a lot of money. So the organizations are going to move around, and you’ve got to have certain processes in place. Otherwise people are going to start continuing.”
