Retired Army General Mark Milley — who most recently served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — has accepted teaching positions at two prestigious universities.

According to a report from Axios, Milley will be instructing students at both Princeton University — his own alma mater — and Georgetown University in subjects relating to national security.

Milley attended Princeton, where he graduated in 1980 and received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. His return to the school will see him acting as a Charles and Marie Robertson visiting professor through the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA).

According to a statement from Princeton University, Milley “will serve as a guest lecturer, meet with students, engage with alumni and faculty, and provide input on the School’s Security Studies Ph.D. program.”

Dean Amaney Jamal praised the decision, saying that Milley’s “experience in the nation’s capital as well as abroad in conflict zones” would provide excellent context for his students in the coming year. His appointment at Princeton is set to expire in June of 2025.

Milley’s tenure as Joint Chiefs Chair was marked by a number of high-profile clashes with former President Donald Trump, his involvement in the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, and several contentious Capitol Hill hearings regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the military.

“I’ve read Mao Tse-Tung; I’ve read Karl Marx; I’ve read Lenin. That doesn’t make me a communist. So what is wrong with understanding, having some situational understanding about the country for which we are here to defend?” Milley said during a 2021 hearing.

“And I personally find it offensive that we are accusing the United States military, our general officers, our commissioned, non-commissioned officers, of being ‘woke’ or something else because we’re studying some theories that are out there.”
