A woman has accused New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams of sexually assaulting her in 1993 and is seeking $5 million in a lawsuit filed Wednesday.
The lawsuit was filed just before the Adult Survivors Act deadline, naming Adams — who was an NYPD officer at the time — along with the NYPD’s Transit Bureau as defendants in the case. The accuser was also a city worker at the time of the alleged assault, the filing said according to The New York Post.
The defendants are accused of “sexual assault, battery and employment discrimination on the basis of the Plaintiff’s gender and sex, retaliation, hostile work environment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.”
The 3-page summons doesn’t go into detail about any of the accusations, and Adams and City Hall quickly denied the allegations, saying the mayor doesn’t know who the accuser is.
“It did not happen. That’s not who I am. That’s not who I am in my professional life,” said Adams. “It’s just something that never took place.”
“The mayor does not know who this person is,” a spokesperson for Adams’ office said. “If they ever met, he doesn’t recall it. But he would never do anything to physically harm another person and vigorously denies any such claim.”
The Adult Survivors Act, which went into effect in November of 2022, gave accusers a one-year window to file suits in state and federal courts regardless of when the alleged abuse occurred. That one-year window expired on Friday.
The sexual assault allegations against Adams come as the mayor faces scandal and crises on multiple fronts. Earlier this month, the FBI launched an investigation into whether Adams’ campaign received illegal donations from the Turkish government during his 2021 race. Adams was confronted by the FBI while walking on the street with his security detail, and the agents proceeded to confiscate two of Adams’ cell phones and an iPad before returning them within days.

Adams has recently been a thorn in the side of the Biden administration, constantly calling on the president and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to do more to address the border crisis as New York City is overrun with illegal immigrants. Following the news of the FBI’s probe into Adams’ campaign, the mayor canceled his plan to discuss illegal immigration and the border crisis with the Biden administration.
