After release of a video of a young girl in school being forcibly removed from her desk by a school resource officer, the world erupted in judgment and anger. No, we do not have all the facts or context, but of course that doesn’t stop the media from running their own narrative: white cops are racist and this girl is a victim because she is black.
CNN’s Don Lemon called the exchange “disturbing” but called to see all the facts and precipitating events leading to the altercation. Naturally, Don Lemon is belittled by the other guest, a legal analyst, Sonny Hostin, for even calling for such a thing. Since, after all, everything is racist, all the time, always and context is irrelevant.
“It does look disturbing,” said Lemon. “The part that is most disturbing to me is seeing her thrown around.”
But then he cautioned that we still did not have all the facts. “As far as the desk going over, I don’t know if the desk fell over because she didn’t want to get up or if he pushed it over,” he said. “I don’t know. I think there’s context to everything. I would like to see what happens before and I would like to see what happened afterwards… It does look horrible. It does look like there’s no excuse for what he’s doing to her, but again, we don’t know… This only show a small slice in time of what happened. I’d like to know more before passing judgment.”
“Are you guys kidding me?” said an outraged Hostin.
“No, we’re not kidding,” Lemon responded. “We don’t know what happened. You weren’t sitting in the room, Sunny. You don’t know if she wasn’t standing up!”
“I don’t need to know more,” said Hostin.
“You do need to know more! As a prosecutor, you should want to know more,” responded Lemon, clearly incensed.
“This is a young girl!” Hostin shouted.
Calling for facts equated to Don Lemon placing a large target on his own back. Twitter unleashed with some troubling attacks including the “Uncle Tom” reference.
