<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Denmark is reportedly open to discussing a more prominent role for the United States in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/greenland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Greenland</a> short of a wholly selling the island.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Danish government is trying to avoid a public dispute with the incoming Trump administration over the future of Greenland. While Denmark is against selling Greenland to the U.S., Danish officials have sent messages to Trump officials offering discussion on a new partnership in Greenland’s future, according to </span><a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/01/11/denmark-response-trump-greenland-threat" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Axios</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The messages were sent in response to Trump’s expressed willingness to purchase Greenland outright. The president-elect has said that the United States has major national security interests in Greenland and that the island is a key to pushing back against Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic, an issue that will grow more prominent as Arctic ice melts and opens and expands new lanes for shipping.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation,” Trump </span><a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-greenland-will-benefit-tremendously-if-and-when-it-becomes-part-of-our-nation"><span style="font-weight: 400;">said</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in a recent post on Truth Social. “We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Trump first raised a potential purchase of Greenland during his first term, though the suggestion was largely dismissed. Trump’s renewed interest in purchasing the island appears to be a much more serious proposal, however, and that has worried Danish officials who do not want to sell the island nor fight publicly with the Trump administration over it.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Danish officials grew more worried after Trump did not rule out using the U.S. military to protect U.S. security interests on Greenland.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Danish leaders have sent messages to the president-elect through intermediaries pitching the case that the U.S. and Danish governments can reach a new agreement on Greenland that will satisfy Trump’s concerns over national security, but stop short of a full sale of the island.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Friday, top leaders in Denmark and Greenland met in Copenhagen to discuss Trump’s offer to buy Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a press conference afterward that she had requested a meeting with the president-elect. Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egede said that Greenland should be an independent nation.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic,” Egede said.</span></p>
