President Donald Trump announced on Sunday night that Louisiana Republican Governor Jeff Landry will serve as special envoy to Greenland as the president keeps his sights set on the large mineral-rich territory.
Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115760829286615399">said</a> that Landry, who previously served as a U.S. congressman and Louisiana&#8217;s attorney general, &#8220;understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World.&#8221; Landry said his appointment as special envoy to Greenland will not interfere with his job as governor.

After making a strong push to acquire Greenland earlier this year, the Trump administration has said little about the proposal, but the president has not forgotten about his goals for the northern territory that sits in a strategic position between North America and Russia.
Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-absolutely-considering-annexing-greenland-i-dont-take-anything-off-the-table">said</a> in March that he was discussing with his advisers ways the United States could take over Greenland, such as purchasing it from Denmark, and gave “100%” certainty that “we’ll get Greenland.” Greenland is currently a territory of Denmark but operates as a somewhat autonomous country.
“You have ships sailing outside Greenland from Russia, from China and from many other places. And we’re not going to allow things to happen that are going to be — that are going to hurt the world or the United States,” Trump added at the time.
After Trump appointed Landry as special envoy on Sunday night, leaders in Greenland and Denmark expressed concern that Trump was once again making moves in his plan to take over the territory.
&#8220;We have said it before. Now, we say it again. National borders and the sovereignty of states are rooted in international law,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a joint statement, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/denmark-greenland-trump-landry-special-envoy-7df618b975f25f7a606ec84f6d82bff9">Associated Press</a>. “They are fundamental principles. You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security.”

&#8220;Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the U.S. shall not take over Greenland,” the two leaders added. “We expect respect for our joint territorial integrity.”
The Trump administration argues that Greenland is vital to U.S. national security, while it could also provide the United States with rare earth minerals and oil. The Trump administration also wants to gain an advantage over Russia and China, which have both sought to influence and use Greenland for their own interests.

High-ranking U.S. intelligence officials directed agencies to gather information on Greenland last week as part of President Trump&#8217;s determined effort to acquire the mineral-rich Arctic island.
Several high-ranking officials under Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard issued a classified &#8220;collection emphasis message&#8221; to intelligence agency heads last week, instructing them to acquire intel regarding Greenland&#8217;s independence movement and identify people supportive of U.S. objectives, top officials <a href="https://www.wsj.com/world/greenland-spying-us-intelligence-809c4ef2?mod=hp_lead_pos1">told</a> The Wall Street Journal.
A &#8220;collection emphasis message&#8221; indicates a high priority objective for intelligence agencies, whose collection resources include surveillance satellites, intercepting electronic communications, and even agents on the ground.
Gabbard gave tacit confirmation of the directive’s existence in a statement admonishing the WSJ, writing: “The Wall Street Journal should be ashamed of aiding deep state actors who seek to undermine the President by politicizing and leaking classified information. They are breaking the law and undermining our nation’s security and democracy.&#8221;
The classified directive, sent to the CIA, Defense Intelligence Agency, and National Security Agency, marks one of the first tangible moves toward carrying out President Trump&#8217;s desire to acquire the mineral-rich, geopolitically significant territory.
National Security Council spokesman James Hewitt declined to comment on the leaked intelligence, but did state, “The president has been very clear that the U.S. is concerned about the security of Greenland and the Arctic.”
&#8220;We need Greenland for national security and even international security, and we&#8217;re working with everybody involved to try and get it,&#8221; President Trump stated during a March joint address to Congress. &#8220;One way or the other, we&#8217;re going to get it.&#8221;
Vice President JD Vance, then-National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright traveled to Greenland in March, prompting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/world/greenlanders-are-angry-and-confused-over-unwanted-u-s-visit-87e701c2">complain</a> of &#8220;completely unacceptable pressure on Greenland.&#8221;
The approximately 836,000 square mile territory is <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/11/24/781598549/greenland-is-not-for-sale-but-it-has-the-rare-earth-minerals-america-wants">estimated</a> to hold roughly a quarter of the world’s rare-earth minerals necessary for various technologies, along <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/greenland-suspends-oil-exploration-because-of-climate-change">with</a> an estimated 17.5 billion undiscovered barrels of oil and 148 trillion cubic feet of natural gas that could strengthen American energy independence.
The intelligence directive comes as the Arctic has become an increasingly <a href="https://www.thearcticinstitute.org/new-cold-war-china-declares-near-arctic-state/">contested</a> geopolitical arena, with China declaring itself a &#8220;near-Arctic state&#8221; and Russia expanding its military presence in the region.
Moscow has reopened Soviet-era Arctic bases and deployed nuclear-capable missiles to its northern territories, while Beijing has invested billions in Arctic infrastructure projects, including <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-the-pentagon-countered-chinas-designs-on-greenland-11549812296">attempts</a> to finance airports in Greenland that were ultimately blocked by Denmark with U.S. support.
Danish officials have repeatedly rebuffed Trump&#8217;s interest in acquiring the island, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/denmark-pm-repeats-that-greenland-is-not-sale-2025-02-03/">saying</a> in February: &#8220;Greenland is today a part of the kingdom of Denmark. It is part of our territory, and it&#8217;s not for sale.&#8221;
However, some Greenlandic independence advocates have expressed increasing openness to stronger ties with the United States in recent months.
One resident told the New York Post in March, “I think we need change here in Greenland. We are tired of the Danish colonialism,” <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/03/27/us-news/trumps-greenlandic-supporters-lean-away-from-denmark-aim-to-build-us-ties-make-greenland-great-again/">said</a> Lars Kleist, a Greenlandic Inuit who said he lost his job in 2020 because of his pro-independence views. “When you enter the town, everything is ruled by the Danish,” who are only 10% of the population.
As such, the intelligence directive specifically instructed agencies to assess Greenland&#8217;s political landscape and identify local leaders who might be receptive to American overtures, according to sources familiar with the order.

The U.S. Space Force announced on Thursday that it had <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/04/11/us-news/space-force-col-susannah-meyers-fired-after-email-about-jd-vances-greenland-visit-surfaces/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stripped</a> Col. Susannah Meyers, who ran the U.S. Space Force base in Greenland, of her command after she voiced disapproval of Vice President JD Vance’s statements when he visited the base last month.
During his speech at Pituffik Space Base, Vance <a href="https://singjupost.com/transcript-of-jd-vance-remarks-at-pituffik-space-base-in-greenland/?singlepage=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warned</a> about “Russia and China and other nations  &#8230; taking an extraordinary interest in Arctic passageways and Arctic naval routes and indeed in the minerals of the Arctic territories. We need to ensure that America is leading in the Arctic because we know that if America doesn’t, other nations will fill the gap where we fall behind.”
He addressed Denmark, saying, “Let’s be honest, what Denmark over the last 20 years has failed to do in some cases, because we know that unfortunately this place, this base, the surrounding area is less secure than it was 30, 40 years ago, because some of our allies haven’t kept up.”
“There is no amount of bullying, no amount of obfuscating, no amount of confusing the issue,” he continued. “Our message to Denmark is very simple. You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland, and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass filled with incredible people. That has to change.”
On March 31, Meyers sent an email to the troops under her command saying she had “spent the weekend thinking about Friday&#8217;s visit &#8212; the actions taken, the words spoken, and how it must have affected each of you. &#8230; I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base,” Military.com <a href="https://www.military.com/daily-news/2025/04/10/space-force-commander-greenland-sent-out-email-breaking-vance-after-his-visit.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
On Thursday, the Space Force <a href="https://www.spoc.spaceforce.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/4152328/for-release" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a>, “Colonel Susannah Meyers, commander of Pituffik Space Base was removed from command by Colonel Kenneth Klock, commander of Space Base Delta 1, on April 10, 2025 for loss of confidence in her ability to lead. Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as it relates to remaining nonpartisan in the performance of their duties. Colonel Shawn Lee has assumed command.”
“Actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense,” Sean Parnell, the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, wrote on X.

President Donald Trump said Saturday he has spoken with advisers about annexing Greenland and has not ruled out military force.
Trump made the comments in a 10-minute phone interview with <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-says-couldnt-care-less-automakers-raise-prices-tariffs-rcna198731" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a>. The president said that he has “absolutely” spoken with top aides about annexing Greenland, a semiautonomous Danish territory in the northwest hemisphere, and gave “100%” certainty that “we’ll get Greenland.”
On acquiring Greenland, there is a “good possibility that we could do it without military force,” Trump said, but added that “I don’t take anything off the table.”
Asked about what message the United States acquiring Greenland would send to Russia, Trump dismissed the question.
“I don’t really think about that. I don’t really care. Greenland’s a very separate subject, very different. It’s international peace. It’s international security and strength,” the president said. “You have ships sailing outside Greenland from Russia, from China and from many other places. And we’re not going to allow things to happen that are going to be — that are going to hurt the world or the United States.”
The Trump administration has expressed interest in purchasing Greenland from Denmark. Administration officials have said Greenland, with its proximity to Russia and Arctic shipping lanes, represents a key security interest for the United States. Officials have also expressed interest in tapping into Greenland’s natural resources.
Vice President JD Vance visited U.S. sites on Greenland last week and scolded Denmark for its management of the territory,
“Our message to Denmark is very simple — you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland,” Vance <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/vance-calls-out-denmark-for-failures-in-greenland-you-have-not-done-a-good-job" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “You have underinvested in the people of Greenland and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful land mass.”

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen posted a <a href="https://x.com/larsloekke/status/1905764027210547565" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a> to social media after Vance’s visit hitting back at criticism from the White House.
&#8220;Many accusations and many allegations have been made. And of course, we are open to criticism,&#8221; Rasmussen said. &#8220;But let me be completely honest: we do not appreciate the tone in which it is being delivered. This is not how you speak to your close allies. And I still consider Denmark and the United States to be close allies.&#8221;

The president doubled down on his push for the island nation while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office — just a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Trump was dead serious about taking over the island.
&#8220;We need Greenland very importantly, for international security, we have to have Greenland,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not a question of, &#8216;Do you think we can do without it?&#8217; We can&#8217;t. If you look at Greenland right now, if you look at the waterways, you have Chinese and Russian ships all over the place, and we&#8217;re not going to be able to do that. We&#8217;re not relying on Denmark or anybody else to take care of that situation.&#8221;
&#8220;And we&#8217;re not talking about peace for the United States,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;We&#8217;re talking about world peace. We&#8217;re talking about international security. And right now, you look at it, you have warships all over the place going through right along Greenland. We&#8217;re not going to let that happen. We cannot let that happen, or if it&#8217;s going to happen, we have to be protective of our country.&#8221;
The president said that &#8220;modern day weaponry&#8221; made Greenland &#8220;very important&#8221; from a strategic defense standpoint.
&#8220;If you notice, also some of those, you could call them roadways, they&#8217;re water roadways, but some of those areas are opening up and they&#8217;re opening up,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Ice breakers out there, they&#8217;re opening them. And by just nature, they&#8217;re opening up and they&#8217;re headed right into China, right into Russia, and we have no choice.&#8221;

Vice President JD Vance ripped Denmark during his visit to Greenland on Friday, saying the European country has &#8220;not done a good job&#8221; of protecting and investing in the arctic territory.
During remarks to U.S. troops at Pituffik Space Base, Vance said that the United States would take better care of Greenland than Denmark has. While Greenland has been mostly an autonomous territory since 1979, Denmark maintains its security and defense. The Trump administration, however, has pushed for taking control of Greenland, arguing that both Greenland and the United States would benefit from American control of the territory.

During his speech at the military base, Vance argued that Greenland is in a vulnerable position as world powers such as Russia and China make aggressive moves around the globe.

As Vance was addressing American troops in Greenland, President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that the United States needs Greenland for &#8220;international security.&#8221;
&#8220;We have to have Greenland. It&#8217;s not a question of, &#8216;Do you think we can do without it?&#8217; We can&#8217;t,&#8221; Trump said.
The Trump administration also has its sights set on Greenland&#8217;s natural resources as the territory is potentially rich in minerals and oil. Earlier this week, the Trump administration slammed Danish leaders and previous United States administrations for &#8220;neglect and inaction&#8221; on Greenland.
&#8220;In the decades since, neglect and inaction from Danish leaders and past U.S. administrations have presented our adversaries with the opportunity to advance their own priorities in Greenland and the Arctic,&#8221; a statement from the Office of the Vice President stated. &#8220;President Trump is rightly changing course.&#8221;

President Donald Trump has suggested making Greenland a part of the United States, arguing that the move would be good for both Greenlanders and Americans.
&#8220;I think a lot of Americans wonder, &#8216;Well, why does Greenland matter so much? Why does the mission of this base matter so much to the American people?'&#8221; Vance said. &#8220;And I learned a lot about that today myself. Of course, you can read about it in a book, but I saw it up close and personal. And if, God forbid &#8230; if a missile was from an enemy country or an enemy submarine into the United States, it is the people here before us who would give notice to our brave men and women farther south in the United States to let people know what was coming, and God willing, to try to shoot it down and prepare for it.&#8221;

Vice President JD Vance revealed on Tuesday that he will join his wife, second lady Usha Vance, in Greenland this week after the territory&#8217;s prime minister <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/greenland-pm-complains-about-usha-vances-upcoming-visit-says-american-aggression-will-increase" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> that the U.S. visit is proof of increased aggression.
Greenland Prime Minister Mute B. Egede said on Sunday that Usha traveling to the Danish territory to attend a dogsled race and visit historical sites &#8220;can in no way be characterized as a harmless visit from a politician’s wife.&#8221; Egede said he is mostly concerned about Trump National Security Advisor Mike Waltz joining the U.S. delegation to Greenland, arguing, &#8220;The only purpose is to show a demonstration of power to us.&#8221; Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also said she is concerned about the U.S. visit, commenting that it “cannot be seen in isolation from the public statements that have been made.”
In a video posted to X, the vice president said, &#8220;There was so much excitement around Usha&#8217;s visit to Greenland this Friday that I decided I didn&#8217;t want her to have all that fun by herself, so I&#8217;m going to join her.&#8221; He added that his trip to Greenland will focus on visiting members of the Space Force and looking into &#8220;what&#8217;s going on with the security there in Greenland.&#8221;
The U.S. delegation to Greenland comes as President Donald Trump floats the idea of the territory becoming part of the United States. The president argues that Greenland would &#8220;benefit tremendously&#8221; from becoming part of the United States and that the country needs Greenland &#8220;for national security.&#8221; Greenland is <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/greenlands-rich-largely-untapped-mineral-resources-2025-01-13/">rich</a> in natural resources such as rare earth minerals, oil, and natural gas.
In his video, Vance said that &#8220;a lot of other countries have threatened Greenland, have threatened to use its territories and its waterways to threaten the United States, to threaten Canada, and of course to threaten the people of Greenland.&#8221;
&#8220;Speaking for President Trump, we want to reinvigorate the security of the people of Greenland because we think it&#8217;s important to protecting the security of the entire world,&#8221; Vance added. &#8220;Unfortunately, leaders in both America and in Denmark, I think, ignored Greenland for far too long. That&#8217;s been bad for Greenland. It&#8217;s also been bad for the security of the entire world. We think we can take things in a different direction, so I&#8217;m going to go check it out.&#8221;

JD Vance To Join Wife In Greenland After PM Complains That U.S. Visit Is ‘Demonstration Of Power’

Vance and her delegation will attend Greenland&#8217;s national dogsled race, the Avannaata Qimussersu, and visit &#8220;historical sites.&#8221; President Donald Trump&#8217;s National Security Advisor, Waltz, will also be part of the delegation, a move that Egede believes is a provocation by the Trump administration. The U.S. delegation to Greenland comes as Trump continues to push for the Danish territory to become part of the United States.
&#8220;We are now at a level where it can in no way be characterized as a harmless visit from a politician&#8217;s wife,&#8221; Egede told Greenland newspaper <a href="https://www.sermitsiaq.ag/samfund/mute-nu-ma-det-internationale-samfund-traede-til/2212338" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sermitsiaq</a>, adding, &#8220;Because what is the security advisor doing in Greenland? The only purpose is to show a demonstration of power to us, and the signal is not to be misunderstood.&#8221;
During his visit, Waltz will tour a U.S. military base in Greenland alongside Energy Secretary Chris Wright, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/23/us/politics/usha-vance-trump-us-greenland.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes said, “The United States has a vested security interest in the Arctic region, and it should not be a surprise the national security adviser and secretary of energy are visiting a U.S. space base to get firsthand briefings from our service members on the ground.”
“We also look forward to experiencing Greenland’s famous hospitality and are confident that this visit presents an opportunity to build on partnerships that respects Greenland’s self-determination and advances economic cooperation,&#8221; Hughes added. &#8220;This is a visit to learn about Greenland, its culture, history and people.”
Egede claimed that Waltz&#8217;s presence in Greenland would add fuel to the fire for Trump&#8217;s goal of taking over the territory and criticized Greenland&#8217;s allies for not speaking up more to counter the Trump administration&#8217;s suggestions about taking over the territory.
&#8220;Yes, the Western allies stood together and helped each other through thick and thin, but it has turned upside down now with the sitting president in the USA,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But the fact that our other allies in the international community feel like hiding in a small corner and almost whispering that they support us has no effect, and if they do not speak out loudly about how the USA is treating Greenland, the situation will escalate day by day, and the American aggression will increase.&#8221;
Trump has said that Greenland would &#8220;benefit tremendously&#8221; by becoming part of the United States, but in January, Egede <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/greenland-pm-we-dont-want-to-be-americans-but-we-want-a-strong-cooperation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a> to Trump&#8217;s repeated suggestions, stating, &#8220;We don’t want to be a part of the U.S., but we want strong cooperation together with the U.S.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also expressed concern over the U.S. delegation to Greenland, saying the visit &#8220;cannot be seen in isolation from the public statements that have been made.&#8221;
&#8220;This is something we take seriously,&#8221; Frederiksen added.

Usha Vance will visit &#8220;historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland&#8217;s national dogsled race,&#8221; her office said. That race includes 444 dogs and 37 mushers &#8220;in a remarkable display of speed, skill, and teamwork.&#8221;
Vance will bring one of her sons with her on the visit. It&#8217;s not immediately clear which son that is.
&#8220;Ms. Vance and the delegation are excited to witness this monumental race and celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity,&#8221; the press release said. &#8220;They will return to the United States on Saturday, March 29, 2025.&#8221;

The trip comes amidst a push from President Donald Trump for Greenland to become part of the United States.
Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-greenland-will-benefit-tremendously-if-and-when-it-becomes-part-of-our-nation">said on January 7 in a Truth Social post:</a> &#8220;Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egede told Fox News in January that he’s “open” to discussions over America’s role in Greenland’s defense — but not interested in becoming part of the United States.
“We don’t want to be Danes. We don’t even want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders,” Egede said.

President Donald Trump said this week that he believes the United States will annex Greenland, the world&#8217;s largest island.
Trump made the remarks to reporters while speaking in the Oval Office to NATO chief Mark Rutte when asked about the &#8220;potential annexation of Greenland.&#8221;
&#8220;Yeah, well, I think it&#8217;ll happen,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;And I&#8217;m just thinking, I didn&#8217;t give it much thought before, but I&#8217;m sitting with a man that could be very instrumental.&#8221;
Turning to Rutte, Trump said, &#8220;You know, Mark, we need that for international security, not just security, international. We have a lot of our favorite players cruising around the coast, and we have to be careful, and we&#8217;ll be talking to you.&#8221;
Rutte said that on the matter of NATO being involved in the U.S. acquiring Greenland, he would leave that to the U.S. and Denmark to sort out.
&#8220;But when it comes to the high north in the Arctic, you are totally right,&#8221; Rutte told Trump. &#8220;The Chinese are now using these routes. We know that the Russians are the army [in the region]. We know we have lack of ice breakers.&#8221;
&#8220;So the fact that the seven outside Russia, seven Arctic countries, working together on this, under U.S. leadership, is very important to make sure that that region, that part of the world, stays safe and we know things are changing there, and we have to be there,&#8221; he added.

Trump&#8217;s comments come after two political parties that favor independence from Denmark won in the country’s parliamentary elections this week.
The country’s center-right Demokraatit Party, which favors gradual independence from Denmark, won 29.9% of the vote, meaning it will have to form a coalition with other parties to form a government.
The top opposition party, Naleraq, which has a positive view of Trump and favors rapid independence from Denmark, came in second place with 24.5% of the vote, according to CNN.
Inuit Ataqatigiit, the leftist incumbent ruling party, came in third with 21.4% of the vote, while another left-wing party, Siumut, came in fourth with 14.7%, the report said.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Demokraatit’s leader, said people in his country wanted “change,” but that does not mean they want “want independence tomorrow” and instead want to wait that there is a “good foundation” set before the island becomes fully independent from Denmark.
Acquiring Greenland has been a top foreign policy objective for Trump as he seeks to expand the U.S. for economic and national security reasons.
During his address to Congress last week, he said, “One way or the other, we’re going to get it.”
Greenland is located in the Arctic Circle, which is a strategic location for missile defense systems, as incoming ballistic missiles from adversaries like Russia would travel through the region to hit the U.S.
The region is also becoming critical for shipping lanes as some of the ice melts, making the waters more navigable.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in January that communist China was trying to stage operations in Greenland to take control of shipping lanes the same way that it has in the Panama Canal.
Rubio said that they are installing facilities that give them access to the Arctic under the cover of a Chinese company, but that, in reality, “serve a dual purpose, that in a moment of conflict, they could send naval vessels to that facility and operate from there.”
