In a tense confrontation reminiscent of the Cuban Missile Crisis, except without Cuba or the missiles or, really, the crisis, the United States has narrowly avoided a harrowing war with Denmark.
The crisis or whatever began when Donald Trump demanded Denmark hand Greenland over to the United States and issued a saber-rattling threat in which the sabers were made entirely of Legos just to add insult to injury. Trump said: “Since you lousy Danes have repeatedly refused to give me the Nobel Peace Prize, I see no reason why I should continue to be peaceful if I don’t get a prize for it. And the Nobel Prize I received from that kooky Venezuelan dame with a name like a Spanish dance number doesn’t count, because people just laugh when they see it, so I’m sending it back and taking Greenland instead.”
When Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained that the Nobel Peace Prize is given in Norway not Denmark, Trump became so enraged he appointed Rubio the King of France so he’d have his head cut off. When he found out the French no longer cut people’s heads off, he appointed Rubio the first lady of France and leaked the news to Candace Owens.
Panicked by the threat of invasion, the Danish Prime Minister whose name no one can pronounce and who might even be a chick for all I know, ordered four brigades of the 101st Hans Christian Andersen Division to sail to Greenland on one of those cute little sailboats like the one in &#8220;The Little Mermaid.&#8221; This increased the tension because, despite its small size, the Danish military is renowned for its tough training, though it’s mostly in folk dancing.
Meanwhile, the administration got to work preparing for war by testing out various battle cries like, “Damn you Danes, no one can even understand what you’re saying!” and “Give us Greenland, Denmark, and none of your stinking Danish tricks!” and “In America, we eat Danish for breakfast, so ha ha ha!”

The administration even prepared a new aggressive Greenland national anthem more suitable for an American colony, with rousing lyrics like, “Oh Greenland, it’s the nicest place you’ve ever seen-land, Where no one’s a wimp, and we’re proud of our shrimp. Oh, Greenland, our home sweet home.”
The news of the impending American attack so upset global elites at their annual gathering in Davos, Switzerland, that they were forced to suspend their usual business of trying to impose obnoxious, useless, and oppressive ideas on people who’d rather pinch their elite noses and twist them like Moe used to do to the other two Stooges than listen to a word these privileged melon-heads have to say. Instead, European leaders and other obscure non-entities took to the stage to make angry speeches as a way of passing their last remaining moments in power before they’re tossed onto the dustbin of history.
The prime minister of Canada, for instance — and I can’t bother to find out his name so just make one up yourself — told the gathering, “There has been such a rupture in the world order that we’re barely able to debank the working class citizens who protest our policies, or arrest anyone who uses Grok to make hilarious pictures of us naked or persecute the saints who pray silently near abortion clinics. If Donald Trump does not restore this world order immediately, Europe will be forced to ally itself with China. After all, China’s a one-party nation with no free speech and a small minority of white people, so it’s basically a European nation already.”
Donald Trump conceded the Canadian’s point and issued a new statement saying, “I war on Denmark declare,” but then found out it was the WORLD order the Canadian premier was complaining about not the WORD ORDER, and Trump issued another declaration, saying, “Oh, it screw.”
As the hour of decision drew ever closer, audiences around the world sat tensely before their televisions, mostly watching &#8220;What’s in the Box?&#8221; Fortunately, at the last minute, Trump decided to make a deal when he realized a war with Denmark might last longer than he thought and interrupt a full half of the AFC Championship game, instead of just the first ten minutes.

Dan Ryan, the executive director of the National Conservative Institute of Australia, says the “anti-hate” laws in particular are a serious invasion of Australian freedom of speech. According to Ryan, the new legal codes would allow the government to outlaw groups that have engaged in “hate crimes,” even if no other existing statute had been violated. Both sets of new laws ignore the real problems that led to the Bondi Beach attack. As Ryan says, “The underlying cause of what occurred in Bondi and the underlying cause of the sort of ethnic tensions that are playing out on the street has been the problems with our immigration program in Australia.”

My office decorations are mostly standard-issue: pictures of my family, a diploma, a couple of concert posters to trick people into thinking I’m fun. But no one notices them at first, as everyone’s eyes inevitably go to the portrait above my desk.
It’s impossible to miss: a big, professionally-framed picture of a Joey Chestnut, smiling triumphantly behind a pile of hot dogs after reclaiming the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest championship from Takeru Kobayashi on July 4, 2007.
Joey came into my possession courtesy of my first boss in Washington, who in the midst of an office redecorating effort reluctantly decided to part with what he called a symbol of American triumph.
I think about that every time I glance up in the middle of the day and see the champ looking back at me, tongue sticking out and eyes wide with the thrill of victory. So you can imagine my disappointment when I learned China had bought Nathan’s.
On Thursday, Smithfield <a href="https://apnews.com/article/nathans-famous-hot-dogs-smithfield-merger-9927a1f0fde1ff32c2f95dc4949d3dfd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that it would purchase the iconic hot dog franchise for $450 million. Of course, “Smithfield” isn’t really Smithfield anymore. The Virginia-based meat producer was itself purchased in 2013 by the Shuanghui Group, which has since renamed itself the more innocuous sounding WH Group.
The WH Group is a Chinese company through and through, which means it is, for all intents and purposes, an arm of the Chinese Communist Party. Its leadership is full of <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2024/01/25/chinese-communist-party-landowner-pork/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CCP bigwigs</a>, who have put the company at the forefront of China’s efforts to purchase American farmland — a major <a href="https://www.americafirstpolicy.com/issues/national-security-threat-of-china-dominated-u.s-agricultural-sectors" target="_blank" rel="noopener">national security threat</a>. At its peak, WH Group owned around 150,000 acres of American land across 29 states.
WH Group has <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/07/08/us-china-farmland-ban-national-security/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduced</a> its American land holdings in response to the Trump administration’s push to ban Chinese companies from buying up American farms. But it still has around 85,000 acres of this country in its possession, a collection to which it can now add Nathan’s original Coney Island location, still standing where it was built in 1916.
It’s fitting that the first Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest of Zohran Mamdani’s mayoralty will be sponsored by the CCP. America’s biggest foe wrapping its tentacles around a symbol of American freedom founded by a Polish Jew. When my old boss called the Joey Chestnut picture a portrait of American triumph, he wasn’t just talking about an American reclaiming the title from a Japanese competitor. He was talking about an American dominating in an extremely American pastime, at a quintessentially American location, on the day we celebrate American independence.
Nathan’s is about as American as it gets. Nathan Handwerker opened his Brooklyn stand in 1916, four years after coming to America. He gained a foothold by selling cheaper products than his competitor and grew his little stand into a global empire. By the time Major League Baseball named Nathan’s its <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/nathan-s-famous-is-official-hot-dog-of-mlb-c221240194" target="_blank" rel="noopener">official hot dog</a> in 2017, they had already become synonymous with ball games, barbecues, and the American dream.
When at the height of the Second World War E.B. White <a href="https://www.npr.org/2012/11/07/164631081/author-e-b-white-on-the-meaning-of-democracy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> that democracy was “the mustard on the hot dog,” he was almost certainly envisioning one of Nathan&#8217;s Famous kosher-style franks.
Even liberalism’s court stenographer, Aaron Sorkin, understands the centrality of Nathan’s to the American image. In a 2002 episode of “The West Wing,” the White House Chief of Staff defends the president’s decision to assassinate a terrorist leader by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOSxwFtBNww" target="_blank" rel="noopener">telling his emissary</a>: “To sweep all fifty states, the President would only need to do two things: blow the sultan&#8217;s brains out in Times Square, then walk across the street to Nathan&#8217;s and buy a hot dog.”
It’s impossible to watch that scene now and not think of President Donald Trump’s now famous declaration that he could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and not lose voters. It’s also hard to think that our first outer borough president relishes the sight of China taking over a beloved American institution.
The overarching goal of Trump’s political career has been to reverse American decline by any means necessary. He’s touched on this aim in merely every speech he’s ever given, including his <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/remarks/2025/01/the-inaugural-address/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Second Inaugural Address</a>:
<blockquote>From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer. During every single day of the Trump administration, I will, very simply, put America first.</blockquote>
Whether striking narcoterrorists or purchasing Greenland, Trump has shown he’ll stop at nothing to revive American greatness. Keeping Nathan’s in American hands seems like an easy way to advance his America First agenda and put the Red Dragon at bay. Surely it doesn’t hurt that Trump once called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nathans-hot-dogs-faces-backlash-over-trump-fundraiser-report-2018-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nathan’s chairman</a> Howard Lorber one of his two best friends.
So come on, Mr. President. What’s one more volley in the trade wars if it means saving an American institution? Imagine that swooping green logo towering over the first American hot dog stand in Nuuk. This is our time for choosing.

President Donald Trump said on Thursday that under the framework of a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-says-framework-of-future-greenland-deal-is-in-place-after-very-productive-meeting?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Trump+Says+%E2%80%98Framework%E2%80%99+Of+Future+Greenland+Deal+Is+In+Place+After+%E2%80%98Very+Productive+Meeting%E2%80%99">plan</a> currently being negotiated between his administration and NATO, the United States would be given &#8220;total access&#8221; to Greenland &#8220;at no cost.&#8221;
Trump <a href="https://x.com/FoxBusiness/status/2014317783996072169">told</a> Fox Business that under the proposal, the United States is &#8220;getting everything we want at no cost.&#8221; The president said that Greenland is vital for U.S. national security and will be used for &#8220;a piece&#8221; of his &#8220;Golden Dome&#8221; missile defense system.
&#8220;Everything comes over Greenland. If the bad guys start shooting, it comes over Greenland,&#8221; he said, adding, &#8220;It&#8217;s pretty invaluable.&#8221;
&#8220;So what are we talking about, an acquisition of Greenland? Are you going to pay for it?&#8221; asked Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo.
&#8220;It&#8217;s really being negotiated now, the details of it,&#8221; Trump replied. &#8220;But, essentially, it&#8217;s total access. There&#8217;s no end. There&#8217;s no time limit.&#8221;
Trump spoke to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos on Wednesday and announced shortly after the meeting that they worked out a &#8220;framework&#8221; for a deal on Greenland. Rutte confirmed that the United States and NATO have made significant progress toward securing an agreement covering the large territory that Denmark oversees. Rutte <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nato-chief-trump-greenland-framework-demands-expanded-european-arctic-role?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=undefined&amp;elementPosition=1&amp;row=3&amp;rowHeadline=Latest+News&amp;rowType=Vertical+Carousel&amp;title=NATO+Chief%3A+Trump+Greenland+Framework+Demands+Expanded+European+Arctic+Role">said</a> on Thursday that, as part of the deal, NATO allies will have to increase their military presence in the Arctic region.
It remains unclear if Greenland and Denmark support the deal currently under negotiation. Danish leaders have strongly opposed Trump&#8217;s push to acquire the territory, while Greenlandic leaders have said they don&#8217;t want to become part of the United States.
Trump has been pushing for the United States to acquire Greenland since returning to the White House last January, and he has increased pressure on Greenland, Denmark, and other European nations over the issue in recent weeks. The president believes that Greenland is essential for U.S. national security, arguing that China and Russia will take over the territory if the United States doesn&#8217;t.
Trump told Bartiromo on Thursday that it&#8217;s still possible that the United States will end up controlling Greenland. During his speech at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday, Trump said he would not use military force to annex the territory.
While Trump says national security is the main reason for his desire to acquire Greenland, rare-earth minerals also play a role in his push. Rare-earth minerals were also part of the framework agreement with NATO, the president said. Trump&#8217;s U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Mike Waltz, who began in the administration as the president&#8217;s national security adviser, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/greenland-important-us-says-trumps-pick-national-security-adviser-2025-01-09/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> last January that the United States needed Greenland for its &#8220;critical minerals&#8221; as well as national security.
Greenland holds large deposits of rare earth minerals that could play a key role in America&#8217;s push to ramp up rare earth mining and end its dependence on China. But Greenland&#8217;s underdeveloped tundra would be challenging to mine for minerals, The Hill <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/5697708-greenland-trump-minerals-rare-earths-denmark-nato/">reported</a>.
“Everyone talks about the minerals. There’s so many,” Trump said on Wednesday. “There’s no such thing as rare earth. There’s rare processing. But there’s so much rare earth. And to get to this rare earth, you got to go through hundreds of feet of ice. That’s not the reason we need it. We need it for strategic national security and international security.”

Trump Says U.S. Would Gain ‘Total Access’ To Greenland ‘At No Cost’ Under Proposed Plan

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Thursday that European nations will have to increase their military presence in the Arctic region as part of a Greenland deal being negotiated by President Donald Trump.
Rutte told Reuters at the World Economic Forum that, following his Wednesday meeting with Trump, NATO must work through a plan to increase security around Greenland.
&#8220;I have no doubt we can do this quite fast. Certainly I would hope for 2026, I hope even early in 2026,&#8221; Rutte said.
Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-says-framework-of-future-greenland-deal-is-in-place-after-very-productive-meeting?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Trump+Says+%E2%80%98Framework%E2%80%99+Of+Future+Greenland+Deal+Is+In+Place+After+%E2%80%98Very+Productive+Meeting%E2%80%99">said</a> on Wednesday that NATO and the United States “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland” after a “very productive meeting” with Rutte. The president added that he would suspend the additional tariffs he planned to impose on European countries that opposed his push to acquire Greenland.
&#8220;It&#8217;s a long-term deal. It&#8217;s the ultimate long-term deal,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://x.com/kaitlancollins/status/2014072620799422963">told</a> reporters. &#8220;And I think it puts everybody in a really good position, especially as it pertains to security and minerals and everything else.&#8221; He added that there would be &#8220;no time limit&#8221; on the deal, saying, &#8220;It&#8217;s forever.&#8221;
Greenland&#8217;s rare earth minerals were also part of the framework agreement, the president said. Trump said on Wednesday, however, that rare earth minerals aren&#8217;t the main reason he wants the territory.

Asked if NATO allies could trust Trump, Rutte replied, &#8220;You can always take Donald Trump at his word.&#8221;
The framework deal agreed upon by Trump and Rutte is not a finalized agreement and will only kickstart serious negotiations on Greenland, according to Trump. The president did not say whether Greenland or Denmark, which oversees the semi-autonomous territory, agreed to the framework deal.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the talks moved forward on Wednesday.
&#8220;It is still a difficult and serious situation, but progress has also been made in the sense that we have now got things where they need to be. Namely that we can discuss how we promote common security in the Arctic region,&#8221; Frederiksen said.
Trump suggested that his plan for the &#8220;Golden Dome&#8221; missile defense system was also a significant point of the discussions with NATO on Greenland.
&#8220;Further information will be made available as discussions progress,” Trump added. “Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me.&#8221;

Wall Street ended higher on Wednesday, with the S&amp;P 500 posting its biggest one-day percentage gain in two months, as investors were buoyed by news that a framework for an agreement on Greenland had been reached and the possibility of new U.S. tariffs on European allies had been averted.
Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite also enjoyed milestone days, gaining the most in percentage terms since January 5 and December 19, respectively.
The advances stood in stark contrast to the previous day&#8217;s selloff, which had been the worst daily performance by all three benchmarks since October 10, and reflected U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s use of tariff threats to press his agenda before pivoting once the policy victory could be declared.
&#8220;We have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region,&#8221; Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. &#8220;Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.&#8221;
Wall Street benchmarks had been trading in positive territory at the time of the announcement, but soared in its wake as investors cheered the aversion of a potential new tariff war over the future of Greenland.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t think who owns Greenland has any immediate impact on anything, in terms of economics,&#8221; said Jason Pride, chief of investment strategy &amp; research at Glenmede.
&#8220;What is the economic impact is whether we all start imposing tariffs on each other,&#8221; he added.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 588.64 points, or 1.21%, to 49,077.23, the S&amp;P 500 gained 78.76 points, or 1.16%, to 6,875.62, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 270.50 points, or 1.18%, to 23,224.83.
Before the mid-afternoon Greenland announcement, Wall Street had been broadly positive, as investors responded to Tuesday&#8217;s bruising selloff. However, while initial momentum had propelled benchmarks more than 1% higher, this energy had been ebbing by early afternoon.
While light on details, Trump&#8217;s announcement allowed markets to focus on underlying strengths within the U.S. economy, including strong earnings from banks.
The latest wave of results from lenders, including some of the largest superregional names, helped send the regional banking index soaring 4.7% to its highest close since November 2024.
Citizens Financial Group surged 7.1% to a record closing high, on the back of a 31.7% jump in quarterly profit. Truist Financial Corp climbed 1.8% after recording higher interest income and fees from investment banking.
All the S&amp;P 500 subsectors rose, led by energy. It was buoyed by Halliburton, which gained 4.1% after earnings beat estimates, while EQT Corp and Expand Energy advanced 6.5% and 4.5% respectively, as natural gas prices hit a six-week high on cold weather.
United Airlines rose 2.2% after the carrier issued an upbeat outlook for the current quarter and the full year. Other airlines benefited from the positive sentiment, with Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and Southwest all gaining between 1.1% and 2.4%.
Meanwhile, Netflix dropped 2.2% after reporting a muted outlook in its latest earnings. The streaming giant&#8217;s stock was also weighed by a pause in share buybacks to help fund the purchase of Warner Bros Discovery&#8217;s studio and streaming businesses.
Kraft Heinz fell 5.7% after a regulatory filing showed Berkshire Hathaway may shed its 27.5% stake in the consumer company.

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he has &#8220;formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland&#8221; after a &#8220;very productive meeting&#8221; with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Trump met with Rutte in Davos shortly after speaking at the World Economic Forum and doubling down on his push to acquire Greenland. The president said that in light of the &#8220;framework&#8221; for the deal, he will suspend the additional tariffs he had planned to impose on February 1 on European countries that oppose his push for Greenland.

Trump Says ‘Framework’ Of Future Greenland Deal Is In Place After ‘Very Productive Meeting’

During President Donald Trump’s first term, his musings about acquiring Greenland were widely dismissed as a joke, serving as fodder for memes and late-night punchlines. In his second term, however, Trump has pressed the idea more seriously, raising it face-to-face with world leaders on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
In his remarks, Trump described Greenland as ‘part of North America’ and argued that it is essential to both his proposed &#8220;Golden Dome&#8221; missile defense system and the broader protection of U.S. national security.
“No nation or group of nations is in any position to be able to secure Greenland other than the United States,” Trump said, arguing that Denmark, which owns the autonomous territory, had failed to meet its NATO obligations to defend it. In recent weeks, Trump has argued that both China and Russia pose a threat to the world’s largest island in the strategic Arctic.

While Trump left open the possibility of military action as he set the stage for negotiations, he reassured the Davos audience that force would not be used, to the great relief of European countries.
“We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be, frankly, unstoppable,” Trump said, before quickly adding, “But I won’t do that… I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force.”
Trump leaned heavily on World War II history, recounting how American forces moved into Greenland after Denmark fell to Nazi Germany in 1940, establishing bases to prevent enemy powers from gaining a foothold in the Western Hemisphere. He called the move to return Greenland to Denmark after the war foolish. 
“How stupid were we to do that? But we did it,” he said, adding that the island was “much more necessary now” than it had been decades earlier.

Trump rejected claims that he wants the island for its rare minerals, saying instead that Greenland&#8217;s value is a matter of national security, given its “key strategic location between the United States, Russia, and China.”

He also noted that past presidents tried to buy the island—likely referring to President Harry Truman, who in 1946 <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/08/22/753192368/fact-check-did-harry-truman-really-try-to-buy-greenland-back-in-the-day">offered</a> $100 million in gold along with rights to a tract of Alaskan oil.
“But there’s so much rare earth, and to get to this rare earth, you’ve got to go through hundreds of feet of ice,” he said. “That’s not the reason we need it. We need it for strategic national security and international security.”
He added that Greenland is “on the northern frontier of the Western Hemisphere.”
“That’s our territory,” he said.
Trump criticized Greenland’s defenses, claiming that Denmark failed to follow through with its pledge to invest $200 million to strengthen its security.

During a question-and-answer session with World Economic Forum President Børge Brende after his speech, Trump said Denmark is a “small country” spending “hundreds of millions to run it.”
“It’s a very big piece of ice. It’s very important that we use that for national and international security. That can create a power that will make it impossible for the bad guys to do anything against the perceived good ones.”

Trump Takes Firm Stance On Greenland At Davos, Rules Out Force

The European Union, one of America&#8217;s largest trading partners, voted on Wednesday to pause a trade deal with the United States that was initially agreed upon last summer. The finalization of the major trade deal is now uncertain over the bloc&#8217;s opposition to President Donald Trump&#8217;s efforts to acquire Greenland.
European Parliament member Bernd Lange said that Trump&#8217;s plans to impose a 10% tariff on European countries that oppose his Greenland push go against the framework of the U.S.-E.U. trade deal, CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/21/european-lawmakers-suspend-us-trade-deal-amid-greenland-tariff-tensions.html">reported</a>. Lange pointed to Trump&#8217;s remarks at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday, when the president said that he would continue to push for control of Greenland and called for &#8220;immediate negotiations.&#8221;
“I guess he didn’t revise his position,&#8221; Lange said. &#8220;He wants to have Greenland as part of the United States as quick as possible.”
Lange, the chair of Parliament’s International Trade Committee, added in a statement that the European Union will pause its work on the trade deal &#8220;until the US decides to re-engage on a path of cooperation rather than confrontation,&#8221; Fox Business <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/european-parliament-halts-work-us-trade-deal-response-trump-greenland-push">reported</a>. While the United States and the European Union agreed to the trade deal&#8217;s framework last year, it can&#8217;t go into effect until the European Parliament gives final approval.
During his speech, Trump said he would not use military force to take over Greenland, which Lange called a positive development, but the European Parliament member added that until Trump takes the additional tariff threat off the table, “There will be no possibility of compromise.” Lange called Trump&#8217;s tariff threats “an attack against the economic and territorial sovereignty of the European Union.”
Trump imposed tariffs on European countries shortly after being sworn in last year as part of his massive &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; tariff agenda, and the European Union responded with tariffs on U.S. goods. The White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/2025/08/joint-statement-on-a-united-states-european-union-framework-on-an-agreement-on-reciprocal-fair-and-balanced-trade/">announced</a> a trade agreement with the European Union last August, saying that the bloc &#8220;intends to eliminate tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and to provide preferential market access for a wide range of U.S. seafood and agricultural goods.&#8221; As part of the deal&#8217;s framework, the Trump administration agreed to drop the tariff rate on the European Union to 15%.
European countries have roundly criticized Trump over his plan to take over Greenland, but the president continues to argue that the United States needs the territory for national security. Greenland controls its own internal affairs, but Denmark oversees the territory and guarantees its security.
While speaking in front of world leaders in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday, Trump said the United States needs Greenland to stop the &#8220;bad guys.&#8221; Trump has repeatedly claimed that China and Russia have their eyes set on conquering Greenland, which would threaten U.S. and global security.
&#8220;All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland, where we&#8217;ve already had it as a trustee, but respectfully returned it back to Denmark not long ago after we defeated the Germans, the Japanese, the Italians and others in World War II,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;We gave it back to them.&#8221;
&#8220;So we want a piece of ice for world protection,&#8221; Trump added. &#8220;And they won’t give it. &#8230; They have a choice: you can say yes, and we will be very appreciative, or you can say no. And, we will remember.&#8221;

The Canadian military recently modeled a hypothetical American invasion of the country and reviewed different responses to the United States deploying troops across the border, Canadian outlet The Globe and Mail <a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-military-models-canadian-response-to-hypothetical-american-invasion/">reported</a> on Tuesday.
The Globe and Mail cited two senior government officials who said the Canadian military is working on a step-by-step plan to respond to a U.S. incursion. The officials reportedly stressed that the model is not a specific military plan, adding that it remains unlikely that the United States would actually launch an offensive operation against its neighbor to the north.
Canada&#8217;s reported preparations come as President Donald Trump ramps up his efforts to acquire Greenland and continues to float the idea of taking control of Canada. In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115925888562624963">shared</a> a photo of an Oval Office meeting with leaders of European nations, and in the background, the image was altered to show a map of the United States controlling Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela.

Canada&#8217;s military pales in comparison to America&#8217;s fighting force in terms of numbers and firepower. Canada has an estimated 70,000 active-duty personnel and has spent just over 1% of the country&#8217;s GDP on the military in recent years. The United States, meanwhile, fields roughly 1.3 million active-duty troops and commands the world&#8217;s most sophisticated air power.
To fend off a hypothetical U.S. attack, Canada would rely on small militias of volunteer or civilian fighters, The Globe and Mail reported. The militias would focus on ambushing U.S. forces and using drone attacks. Some of the tactics would mirror how the Taliban fought American and Canadian troops in Afghanistan during the West&#8217;s 20-year occupation of the Middle East country, one of the government officials told the Canadian outlet.
Canada, a NATO member, could also rely on its European allies if its sovereignty is threatened.
“You know if you come after Canada, you are going to have the world coming after you, even more than Greenland. People do care about what happens to Canada, unlike Venezuela,” retired Canadian Major General David Fraser told The Globe and Mail. “You could actually see German ships and British planes in Canada to reinforce the country’s sovereignty.”
While Canada prepares a plan for how to fight back against a potential American invasion, the nation&#8217;s military maintains a working relationship with the U.S. military. Aircraft from NORAD, the joint U.S.-Canada aerospace defense alliance, are set to <a href="https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/article/norad-aircraft-to-arrive-in-greenland-for-long-planned-activities-canada-us-command/">arrive</a> in Greenland this week for &#8220;long-planned &#8230; activities&#8221; focused on the defense of North America.
Early into his second term, Trump frequently floated the idea of Canada becoming the &#8220;51st state.&#8221; Shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took over as the country&#8217;s leader, Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-tells-newly-elected-canadian-pm-never-say-never-to-canadian-statehood">said</a> “it would be much better for Canada” to become part of the United States, prompting Carney to shoot back and say that Canada “won’t be for sale, ever.”
In May, Trump said that the United States would protect Canada under the president&#8217;s proposed &#8220;Golden Dome&#8221; missile defense system for a $61 billion fee. Or, Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-says-canada-considering-offer-to-become-cherished-51st-state">offered</a> to provide missile defense for Canada for &#8220;ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State.&#8221;
Trump also enraged Canadian leaders and residents shortly after being sworn in for his second term when he imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian products.
As Trump focuses on acquiring Greenland, America&#8217;s NATO allies are scrambling to negotiate with the United States while also standing firm on red lines they have drawn for Greenland. Multiple NATO countries have sent troops to Greenland to conduct military exercises amid Trump&#8217;s threats to take over the territory. Canada is also considering sending a small contingent of soldiers to Greenland to take part in the exercises, Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/canada-could-send-small-contingent-troops-greenland-says-source-2026-01-19/">reported</a>.

Trump said he spoke with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte over the phone and stressed the importance of the United States acquiring Greenland. The president has not yet met in person with leaders from Greenland, Denmark, or other European allies to discuss his push to take over the Arctic territory.

Rutte&#8217;s friendly message to Trump comes as America&#8217;s European allies try to figure out how to respond to Trump&#8217;s push to control Greenland, a plan Europe has strongly denounced. Since Trump has ramped up his effort to acquire Greenland, NATO nations deployed troops to the territory last week for a military exercise.
Over the weekend, Trump announced that he would impose additional tariffs on eight European nations that have opposed his Greenland push. The additional tariffs are set to take effect on February 1 and will apply to imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.
Trump also shared a screenshot of a <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115925848634299232">message</a> from French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday. In the message, Macron tells Trump, &#8220;I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland.
