Voters in a deep-blue state chose to protect sex-based rights and stop minors from receiving gender surgeries, bringing the transgender agenda to a grinding halt.
Coloradans have officially passed Proposition 134, “The Protect Girls’ Sports Act,” and Proposition 135, “The Protect Kids From Irreversible Sex-Change Surgery Act,” according to the Associated Press. Both measures passed with around 52% support.
Protect Kids Colorado, the non-partisan child safety group that led the successful grassroots campaign to get the initiatives on the ballot, told The Daily Wire this was “a true grassroots movement.”
“I could not be prouder of the thousands of everyday Coloradans who came together to make this happen,” Erin Lee, a Colorado mother and executive director of Protect Kids Colorado told The Daily Wire. “This was a true grassroots movement of parents, grandparents, and concerned citizens who gave their time, resources, and hearts to protect children.”
More than 3,300 volunteers came together to collect the 500,000 signatures needed to get the measures on the ballot. The grassroots organization also engaged a large faith coalition that includes more than 500 churches.
Planned Parenthood of Colorado, GLAAD, and several Colorado medical groups publicly opposed the ballot initiatives. Despite having the odds stacked against them, Protect Kids Colorado has accomplished what some political insiders thought impossible.
“The people of Colorado have spoken, and they’ve sent a clear message to our elected leaders: when our legislature fails to represent us on these issues, We the People will come together and take action ourselves,” Lee told The Daily Wire.
“The victory was powered by a broad, grassroots coalition spanning political affiliations, beliefs, communities and generations. Its supporters contributed countless hours and personal resources — not merely to qualify the measures for the ballot, but to ensure their friends and neighbors could make informed decisions at the polls,” Protect Kids Colorado said in a press release.
More than 70% of Americans are “uncomfortable with transgender athletes competing on sports teams that do not match their sex at birth,” and 66% of Americans favor a policy requiring self-identified “transgender” athletes to compete on teams that match their physical sex, according to polling from Pew Research Center.
“Colorado is now the first blue state—and the first state to enact this protection by a direct vote of the people—to follow the lead of 27 other states and establish clear, single-sex guidelines for female athletics,” said Jen Sey, Founder of XX-XY Athletics and Prop 134 Issue Chair said in a press release. “Girls deserve fair competition, equal opportunity and categories that recognize biological sex. Colorado voters have made their voices heard.”
Lee began her advocacy to protect kids from the harms of gender ideology after her 12-year-old daughter was told she could be transgender at an afterschool LGBT club. Lee was investigated by Child Protective Services for refusing to affirm her daughter as a boy.
“I shudder to think that I could have lost all three of my kids for being a good parent, for being unwilling to lie to my daughter and send her down a path of self-hatred and destruction. I was labeled abusive for not affirming my child’s mental health distress,” Lee told The Daily Wire in January 2026.
Lee has called the experience with her daughter “every parent’s worst nightmare.” Now she’s led a grassroots movement that has successfully protected other families from experiencing the same harms, sending political shockwaves through deep blue Colorado. This support for the ballot measures comes while the state has shifted blue by over 13 points in the Senate race and almost 16 points in the gubernatorial race, compared to the 2024 presidential elections, according to NBC News.
“These results also send a powerful political message: pushing gender ideology on children is a losing issue, voters have had enough of men in women’s sports, and protecting kids is a great unifier,” Lee told The Daily Wire. “We’ve proven that these issues transcend party lines. Protecting children isn’t Republican or Democrat — it’s common sense. This victory truly belongs to the people of Colorado.”
