Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) defended the Second Amendment while advocating for school safety during an impassioned speech on the Senate floor Thursday amid calls from Democrats to pass gun control in the wake of this week’s tragedy in Nashville.
Cruz made the remarks defending the Second Amendment as he reintroduced two pieces of legislation — the Securing Our Schools Act and the Protect Our Children’s Schools Act — to improve school security and increase access to student mental health treatment.
Protecting children in schools has been one of Cruz’s top priorities while in the U.S. Senate as evidenced by other pieces of legislation he has put forth to address the issue, including the Safe Kids, Safe Schools, Safe Communities Act of 2022 and the Protecting Communities and Preserving the Second Amendment Act.
“I have fought for 11 years, I’ve introduced legislation, after legislation, after legislation to lock up gun criminals,” Cruz said. “If you commit a crime with a gun, you should be prosecuted and go to jail. If you’re a felon or fugitive or someone with serious mental illness, and you try to illegally buy guns, you should be prosecuted and sent to jail.”

“And repeatedly, Democrats block those bills. The sad reality of this body is if you’re a mom at home, who wants to be able to protect your kids, the Democrats are really eager to disarm you,” Cruz continued. “But if you’re a gangbanger in Chicago, they’re not interested in a gun task force to lock you up and take the murderers off the street. Mr. President, why is it an unreasonable question to ask what’s wrong with having more police officers to protect our kids?”
“I want to show you how little interest the Democrats have. The Senator from Connecticut has gone. He gave his little speech and ran away,” he added. “This is supposed to be the world’s greatest deliberative body. But as long as the press doesn’t do its job. The Senator from Connecticut can send out a fundraising email tonight to all the gun control groups saying, ‘Guess what? We’re coming after the Second Amendment. Please click here.’ That’s cold comfort to the parents who are scared at home right now, to the kids who are scared at home right now. The solutions put forth by the Democrats in this body are not designed to stop crime!”
