“Friends” actress Courteney Cox delivered a behind-the-scenes surprise along with a sweet tribute to Matthew Perry — who played onscreen love interest Chandler Bing to Cox’s Monica Geller — after he passed away late last month at the age of 54.
Cox shared a two-part clip from the show as a part of her Instagram post — and she noted that the first part was what aired on television, but the second part included a much longer take of the studio audience’s reaction.
The clip in question showed the big reveal: Monica popping out from under the covers of Chandler’s bed after presumably spending the night together before Ross (David Schwimmer) was to marry Emily in London. And as Cox noted in her caption, that moment was supposed to depict the end of a one-night stand — but the audience apparently loved it so much, the writers went ahead with the Monica-and-Chandler storyline.

“I am so grateful for every moment I had with you Matty and I miss you every day,” Cox captioned her post.
“When you work with someone as closely as I did with Matthew, there are thousands of moments I wish I could share. For now here’s one of my favorites,” she added. “To give a little backstory, Chandler and Monica were supposed to have a one night fling in London. But because of the audience’s reaction, it became the beginning of their love story. In this scene, before we started rolling, he whispered a funny line for me to say. He often did things like that. He was funny and he was kind.”
While all five of the remaining core cast members — Cox, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, and Jennifer Aniston — released a joint statement shortly after the “unfathomable loss” of their colleague and friend, only Cox and LeBlanc have made individual statements thus far.

“It is with a heavy heart I say goodbye. The times we had together are honestly among the favorite times of my life. It was an honor to share the stage with you and to call you my friend. I will always smile when I think of you and I’ll never forget you. Never,” LeBlanc said, closing with a joke about Perry still owing him $20.
