College Football Player Dies Minutes After Scoring Touchdown

A Missouri college football player tragically passed away after suffering a fatal medical emergency right on the field moments after scoring a touchdown.

MicahJo Barnett, a 20-year-old running back for the William Jewell College Cardinals, died Saturday following a sudden collapse on the team’s sideline during a home game in Liberty, Missouri. The game was abruptly halted as paramedics rushed to the field. School officials have not yet released an official cause of death.

In a heartbreaking twist, teammates revealed that Barnett’s final act on the field was putting points on the board.

“He scored like, right before his final moments,” teammate Jayshawn Richmond told local outlet KMBC-TV. “And we [are] just going to continue on where he started.”

Barnett, a junior majoring in business administration, previously led Liberty North High School to a state championship, racking up 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns in his senior year. At William Jewell College, he quickly became a standout star, leading the Cardinals with 366 rushing yards and four touchdowns last season despite missing time due to injury.

Off the field, teammates described Barnett as an inspiring leader and the ultimate go-to guy.

“He was a hometown kid… Everybody looked up to him,” Richmond recalled. “He was a guy you go to whenever… you just need a little bit more motivation.”

The devastating loss sent shockwaves through the tight-knit campus community, which gathered for an emotional candlelight vigil on the college quad Saturday night.

“We are absolutely heartbroken over the tragic passing of MicahJo Barnett,” William Jewell Vice President for Athletics Ryan Erlacher said in a statement, remembering the young athlete as an “exceptional young man who made a tremendous impact.”

In 2024, the high school sports world was shocked when Connor Kasin, a 17-year-old hockey star from Massapequa High School on Long Island, collapsed on the ice during a game at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, New York, following a sudden medical event. He died later at a local hospital.

Kasin also played for the Long Island Sharks U-18 travel hockey team. Jeff Tempone, head coach of the Sharks, said Kasin “always had a smile and a laugh” on his face, adding, “He was a hard-nosed, hard-working defenseman. He was a lot of fun. He was a great teammate. He had the respect of all of his teammates, both past and present. It’s a huge loss. Hockey lost another one way too early.”
