In a press release Wednesday, radical left activist group Code Pink announced its newest idea for how to publicly dump on President Trump: to publicly display him dumping.
For the big “Salute to America” event in Washington, D.C. on Independence Day — which, to the chagrin of the pacifist group, will include a few tanks this year — Code Pink will not only fly a Trump Baby Blimp and a bunch of Baby Trump balloons, it will be displaying a giant “Trump Robot sitting on golden toilet.”
“This 4th of July, CODEPINK will host a festival on the National Mall from 2-6pm to protest the Trump administration’s politicization of our national holiday,” the activist group announced in a press release. “The anti-war organization will be featuring the Trump Baby Blimp, made famous in the UK, and a 16-foot Trump Robot sitting on a golden toilet, as well as lots of small Baby Trump balloons. The festival will also include stand-up comedy, a dance party, and an open mic for participants to bring attention to issues that are important to them.”
So what is Code Pink so upset with Trump about? The same thing the group is perpetually upset about: the “glorification of war.”
“The president is shifting the 4th of July festivities to celebrate his administration and to glorify war,” said Code Pink co-founder Media Benjamin. “We will bring together people opposed to the pain and suffering caused by this administration, from concentration camps at the border to supplying weapons used by Saudi Arabia to kill Yemeni children. We want to celebrate the power we have as Americans to work toward peace.”
The group also decries that the Trump administration is “putting children in cages, banning refugees and immigrants, aligning with the murderous Saudi regime, supporting Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land, instigating a war with Iran, orchestrating a coup in Venezuela, and spreading hate and racism across the U.S. and the world.”
Celebrating the 4th along with Trump amounts to embracing “racism, hate, and violence,” the group suggests. “CODEPINK and other activists refuse to stand by as the president uses a national holiday to promote policies of racism, hate, and violence at home and abroad,” the group says.
Another thing that has apparently really miffed the group is that Trump is handing out VIP tickets to the “racism, hate, and violence”-promoting July 4th celebration to his campaign contributors and members of the RNC, but not the Democrats, though it’s unclear from their description why Democrats would want to attend. The way taxpayer money is being used to promote his re-election, said Code Pink’s co-director Ariel Gold, is “absolutely shameful.”
Trump, meanwhile, has spent the week hyping up the big Independence Day celebration — and has made clear that what he’s most amped about is the chance to honor the very military Code Pink so relentlessly protests. “Big 4th of July in D.C. ‘Salute to America,'” he tweeted Tuesday. “The Pentagon & our great Military Leaders are thrilled to be doing this & showing to the American people, among other things, the strongest and most advanced Military anywhere in the World. Incredible Flyovers & biggest ever Fireworks!”
