New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu slammed former President Donald Trump while discussing the upcoming 2024 presidential election, saying that he was positioning himself to become a “four-time loser.”
Sununu made the remarks during an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press” on Sunday while discussing the upcoming elections and whether he will enter the Republican Party primary for president.
Sununu said that while there has been a shift in support toward Trump ever since the former president was indicted on dozens of felony charges, “most folks don’t decide who they’re voting for until about three weeks before the election. So there’s a lot of politics to play out.”
“Republicans want someone who can win in November of ’24,” Sununu said. “Donald Trump is a loser. He has not just lost once – he lost us our House seats in 2018, he lost everything in ’20. We should have 54 U.S. Senators right now. We don’t because of his message. So Donald Trump is positioning himself to be a four-time loser in 2024. We need candidates that can win.”
Sununu added that Republicans “got crushed in 2022” and that the party “should have 54 U.S. Senate seats” but came up short “because he is part of that message.”
When asked about whether he is going to run for president, Sununu said everyone will know his decision by July 4th at the latest. He also said that the key factor for whether or not he decides to run will be doing what is best for the party.
“I think the thresholds for the debate are going to be very low to start, in terms of polling numbers and donors,” Sununu said. “So I think you’re going to have a very crowded stage early on, potentially.”
Sununu said that he did not want to be a candidate that was “overcrowding the field,” and that he wants to do what is best for the Republican Party and “not just for Chris Sununu.”
“I want Republicans to win as a team in November of ’24, and if I can be effective in that as a candidate or not, well, that will help make the decision,” he added.
